Yes, well that's typical for romance novels isn't it? Romance anythings, really. That or just stories in general. Gotta fuel that drama and shit somehow, and often that's done by making people stupid. It's why we have tropes like "Too Stupid to Live" and the "Idiot Ball" for when even competent characters just need to fuck it all up.
