If my reason was to find a way back home, then obviosly I would not want to be tied down to some barren land as a noble, serving an incompetent queen/leader, but I guess he had no choice, since he would be wanted as a "criminal" for declining. A lot of people think harshly about the princess. But I think she’s ok. Maybe a little incapable but there’s been successful kings who themselves were incapable but had loyal subordinates who were capable. Her personality is good, she’s not some evil queen
