If you could directly donate to mangaka and/or light novel authors would you? let's say mangadex had a direct link to a their paypal or a service like pateron/ko-fi would you donate them money? How much and how often would you donate? Would this be more appealing than buying official releases or even buying raw manga physical or digital copies?

1&2.) Unless I like the artist and the amount of their fanbox/fantia content is worth enough

3.) I like under 500¥ plans, less fee more subs is better business plan imo. Also these things do add up quickly if you subs to lot of artist so, switching between artists unless I really like them is what I usually do.

4.) No for mangaka, yes for doujinka and free illustrator. Proper job is still the best way for artists to get money after all.

Also if you can splurge, commission through skeb is the best way to support artist.

TIL about skeb. I rather commission for art of my OCs instead of fanart of existing characters, so IDK how that'd fly.

Personally, I skew towards commissioning art (for myself, I'd pay upwards to $$$s, because I like splurging on myself for quality art). If I was in a position to donate, I'd probably donate to scanlation groups (I genuinely appreciate the time that volunteers throw together for a noob like me) or commission a manga I bought that never finished serialization despite being licensed back in the 00s. Then, like the above, probably a doujinshi artist.

If an artist I liked was taking commissions, I'd throw all the money I'd have for something I want. That same spirit isn't around for the existing art they do. But at least I can leave a comment of thank you or a like somewhere (if they're on Webtoon) to show my support that way. Just honest opinion .

It depends on the mangaka. Inio Asano? Definitely. If I had the money to spare and didn't have an epidemic to worry about.
