This feels real compelling, and I think part of the reason I like it so much is because of how much Konata's fucking things up, even if unintentionally and inadvertently.
I don't actually fault him for being so wishy-washy in the face of what's being asked of him, and he's not really getting all of the information in any sort of ordered, expedient manner--but that's also partly because he keeps blabbing to Octa instead of letting her talk, going on and on about "dreams" and "impossibilities" when he's been presented with literal reality-breaking truths in the form of Gyaruka appearing before him.
But this is effectively his fault, for sitting on his feelings for Haruka and for withholding information in general from the two iterations of her. Not being more adamant with Gyaruka should have been at the top of his list, the moment Haruka Prime told him to stay away from her. And his emotional intelligence seems rather low, given she's clearly distressed with Gyaruka around and he's oblivious toward it, seemingly stuck on lamely showing confusion at her distress and never seeking to understand her reasoning. And now that he's immediately broken his promise to Haruka, with her witnessing it no less, I actually hope she simply disappears on him, or at least refuses to be around him. He needs to get his shit together and sorted out, and figure out what he actually wants in all of this. Yes, there's the whole "save the multiverse" angle, but if he takes a second to think, he should realize that the anomaly occurred because Haruka was distressed over him being "taken" from her by her alternate self. For him to immediately prove her fears correct in this moment is just another failure on the growing list.
He's witnessed multiple instances of fuckery at this point, to the extent that him continuing to question whether Octa is really there, or if what she was telling him is indeed the truth, and simply stumbling along and not taking a moment to really question things is only going to make things worse as he drags getting his act together. All of it points to him being thrust into the existential deep end, and he's spending more time asking "why" instead of figuring out where the edge of the pool is, or learning how to swim.
And I'm here for it. This has all the trappings of a story that could get properly dramatic, even with the veneer of "goofy romcom" that it purports itself to be...but it's a pending multiversal collapse, and it would seem one universe has already suffered a horrific fate with Gyaruka's appearance. There's real stakes involved in this, and having Konata fuck things up, hurt Haruka, push her away, get things wrong with Gyaruka and Octa and all the others yet-unintroduced, and having to figure out where he went wrong and how to fix things?
I think there's a good, hard-hitting story in there, that still has space for funnier and softer moments. It's definitely a personal preference thing, but I'd honestly love to see this get heavy and serious, because the scenario presented to us would warrant it, right down to Konata's mother being dead. Tragedy has already been worked into the setting and the characters, so having bigger stakes and heavier narrative beats are absolutely reasonable, I think, and would fill out this story a lot and move it away from just being some "silly twist on harem romcom series #162134".
