man i was thinking this last time but ushigome i feel like is just being pushy now. like sure, she's decided to get her feelings across and try to win him over, but forcing yourself into the group and pulling saotome around isn't really a great way to make him fall for you. if anything you have the advantage having kissed him and confessing first, maybe give him some space to process it instead of forcing yourself on him over and over. after the confession i thought maybe she might overtake the others but with how she's acting i honestly think she's just digging herself a deeper grave.

It's an artifact of Japanese values. Specifically, harmony is important, and disrupting harmony is a cardinal sin. Additionally, people are expected to have an obligation to society at large more important than their own self interest. The reason harem protagonists can't choose, is because making a choice without settling any potential grievances first is perceived as them disrupting harmony for selfish reasons. This dissonance is then also considered a violation of their public/societal obligation. (Two sins for the price of one!)

Note: This is why what Ushigomi-san did is taken so harshly by the other girls. She broke suit/disrupted the harmony early and selfishly. It's also the author essentially telegraphing that she won't win (despite previously being a logically perfect choice). Think of it as Ushigomi-san going from quirky-doof to idiot-ball villain.

This is why in harem stories where one person has already "won" (i.e. Ai Yori Aoshi), there is still dramatic tension for the author to explore, and why the protagonist can't just outright say, "I'm not interested, it's obvious I already have someone." Even if someone else is being a problem, the protagonist/victim isn't allowed to call them out and create a fuss. If they themselves make a fuss to protect themselves, they'll be blamed and shunned despite logically being in the right.

If a heroine wins because "they were the ones who DIDN'T try to obtain happiness by winning his heart against all logic and reason", that's just showing us the losing heroines got screwed for acting like normal girls (in the context of a harem romcom manga) rather than "unrealistically devoted saints constantly putting the blank slate protagonist's happiness over their own despite how much it might hurt them".

Especially since Saotome's yet another dumbass protagonist who can't even consider a girl might be interested in him despite shoving her naked tits into his face and he's only even conscious of it now BECAUSE Ushigomi literally broke through his density (a tiny bit) by ambushing him with a naked confession.

So Hanako "winning" in the future is entirely due to the efforts of the OTHER girls doing the work for her now.
