I might be voicing an unpopular opinion, but I think Kanon is a better pick as captain than Mai. A captain is a leader, and while Mai is certainly supportive and enthusiastic, Kanon is more proactive and charismatic (and doesn't seem to suffer from "dumb brain in hyper active body" syndrome ).

A leader has to be able to think and make decisions balancing a lot of different competing interest. I don't think we've ever seen Kanon do anything but barrel forward. I would be much more comfortable with her in second in command than as the captain. Picard > Kirk
