He just couldn't reject her in that situation in the original story. Later when he truly fell in love he decided to do the ultimate dick move and not live a life of lie anymore.

I've seen cases of people going out with someone they don't particularly love just because they didn't have it in them to reject them. It happens quite often in real life.

It could be possible that the change of her distancing from him to some extent made him stop taking her for granted and kept her on his mind. Something like mistaking friendzoning for playing hard to get. Which... women do in real life to catch men's attention occasionally. It's kinda like a self-fulfilling prophecy at this point. Because she changed her behavior to change the outcome she made it happen.

the only thing closest to a cheat that Laura has is her game knowledge and determination to succeed as an alchemist. And even then her knowledge isn't 100% accurate; some events have occurred differently from the game and worldbuilding is significantly more detailed compared to game stuff (ex. heroine comes from a hidden race of people dedicated to monitoring the demon lord's awakening and safekeeping old knowledge).

As for Lukas and Laura, she's rather indirect with her refusal of him. She's still close friends, but relationship-wise she keeps an "invisible line" of sorts between them instead of directly saying "no". There's only been 1 Lukas POV chapter showing that he would like to bridge the gap, but still respects the distance she's put between them. (All chapters are from Laura's POV, this was the only one giving insight into Lukas).

Otherwise most of the webnovel so far has been plot-related stuff, namely the whole "find cure for magic sickness" and worldbuilding reveals not previously known by Laura.
