no its a setting i was getting spamed by porn bots a while back so i just disabled the ability for non friends to DM me

Click your account > choose privacy > scroll down and find "Start conversations with you" > you can choose 'people you follow' or 'nobody' and save.

Yeah, I was about to edit my post. I decided to look through the settings and found an option for that. I also heard of some people having bot problems. I never had any issues though, luckily. For now.

Thanks for the info @athayanezant, but found it myself. I'm dumb but still smart enough to see if it was in the settings.

My 7 year old student was finally able to play "Ode and Joy" properly after 1 and 1/2 months of practice. I feel like I've regained the 10 years of life I lost while teaching her.
