Not defending the TL choice to name her that way ( I dont like it either exactly because what you described), but in the Original version from Germany Cinderella is actually called Aschenputtel (Asche = ash, obviously). Puttel means something like dirty (like when you fell down into mud) or in this case working in a dirty enviroment as a cleaner, that gets you covered in dust/ash.

So in a way the name Cinderella would fit 100%, but ofc the citizen of that world dont know the English name of FMC of the Brother Grimms fairy tale.
from reading various comments here. Seems to me Cinderella is in fact the exact translation of the author's intent. But it has a bit of a problem in that it's not immediately obvious in English that Cinderella means Ashen Maiden, unlike in Japanese. Also the Disney imagery is troublesome too.
As a solution, I actually think using another language's translation of Cinderella might be a good alternative, particularly if it's easy to get "ash" from the name, as in the case of the German Aschenputtel. That way we get the meaning of Cinderella, and the phonetic association with ash, without the Disney association.

Speaking of that, after the previous comments I read up on the origins of Cinderella. I can't believe for 2 decades I never made the connection that Cinderella is just "cinder" and "ella" combined, because her hair was covered in ashes.

The j-novel translator went with just calling her "Cinders" and later "Lady Cinders". I guess that is the safe option?

I propose we should call her the "Ashen One"

Yeah that's what I mean about it not being immediately obvious in English. Like, even though it doesn't take a genius to make the connection between cinder and ashes, I at least still never made the connection between Cinderella and ashes before this.

Technically you could call her anything that incorporates the idea of "ashes" and "girl", but it seems the author is specifically referencing the fairy tale princess with her name, so it would actually be most accurate to just call her Cinderella. Though ngl I was totally confused when the translation changed her name to that. I didn't even know who was being referred to really.

Thank you translation.
My only criticism is why you change MC nickname to Cinderella? Ash Smeared sound better, since in that world perspective, they call her that because she mask her hair with ash.

If you gonna call someone Cinderella, you would have to know their backstory since Cinderella is not a name you could call someone with appearance alone, also i doubted there are fairly tale name Cinderella anyway.
Yeah I was wondering about that myself. Why the sudden change from ash smeared?

I feel like she lost her purpose somewhere through the story.
Die, and become the fuel that strengthens me.
Feels like a pretty out of character quote. Maybe it's just me though.

The translation feels very....different. Is Cinderella a pun on ash?
i dont know where it is in the actual publications, but essentially Alicia Melrose's Title is the actual Volume Designator in the books, as theyre intended to be split up. However this is book 2-3? material (its been 2 years dont hold me to exact text), so im pretty sure calling the mercenary Aria "Cinderella" is wrong currently, i believe the title actually changes to Cinderella after she meets back up with her wife. It should be Aria the Ash-Crowned for now.

and no, i disagree mods, that spoiler SHOULDNT be there, we already met and saw the culmination of that relationship. Alicia Melrose Seizes what is hers.
Right or at least not with some guy.
i got banned over this discussion, go look through the last couple of chapters discussions for my forcibly spoilered posts.

ok back to reading the chapter...

What the fuck is that design for Miranda? is she going to get a redesign post book 7, because shes supposed to be much less covered, like shes wearing a bra, skirt, and pants in this encounter IIRC. they definitely cut out Miranda and Gelf's back and forth.

However, thats NOT what Rada looks like, she absolutely is an anthropomorphic cat (panther) in the books, not a catgirl.

TL: Rada should not be calling Aria as Cinderella, her title at this time is just Ash Crowned.

idk if this is the writing but the boys invading her personal space makes me uncomfortable. i hope she scares the shit outta them. what happened to getting to know someone and keeping it lowkey? is this rizz?

for the nicknames, i think each one should have a different history. like everyone who calls her ash smeared know her origins, rada can go ash smeared or cinderella bc she knows shes a girl and her origins, people who dont know her should call her ash girl/ash head. i know this is a translation thing so theyre gonna say the same thing but this is my opinion
