Yeah, both Haruka and Cody were right and wrong.

Talking and showing you arent dangerous and that dark elves are just as normal as humans can obviously be the best result.

But if it was a normal dark elf those kids could have straight up murdered someone innocent before talking which could have caused more bloodshed.

HOWEVER if Haruka roughs up some kids/people to scare them of dark elves its not unlikely someone would still attack a normal dark elf since now they will think dark elves are even more dangerous. And even if they dont the townspeople will always be wary of dark elves which isnt great either.

It, like so many things, is a shitty situation no matter what.

Love seeing a character point out that idealistic viewpoints require appropriate strength to be realized

In the context, though, it's a pretty silly thing to say. "I am sending you to teach some out-of-line brats a lesson!" "I prefer talking." "That's a luxury for the strong!" "If I was weak, violence definitely wouldn't work, though..." "...Ah, right."

Obviously you need strength to protect ideals (or even just law and order), but this isn't someone trying to change society (or at least, not yet). The idea of resorting to violence right away is pretty absurd (and if you really have roaming bands of kids beating people to dead, perhaps you should arrest them). Talking things out is the best option, whether you are weak or strong.

It doesn't seem dark elves are universally hated, and if they were, she'd be better off leaving anyway (forcing herself in the middle of people that hate her seems a terrible idea). If this is about general attitude and relationships, it's even worse, so I really don't know where he was going with that (it wasn't a "having the strength of your convictions" moment).

I think his warning is saying that assuming you'll always be OK is a dangerous mindset. It's worked with children, average people, and some monsters, but if Haruka ever runs into something stronger than herself she'll be in danger due to her default mindset of talking things out being the best form of conflict resolution.

I saw the "philosophy of the strong" advice as a separate conversation from the specific issue with the children since he called to her when everyone was leaving. More of a heart-to-heart between adults.

I don't disagree with the sentiment, but that's why I said it's silly in context. He is the one who brought this idea/job up, she is replying to him about it, and then he goes "you can't always reason with people, you know?". To put this another way, if she had replied: "I'll make sure to strike first!" wouldn't he have said: "Whoa, slow down buddy!"?

We can say he read her attitude, but I feel like his comment is a bit out there nevertheless. "That's a philosophy for the strong." is a pretty strong statement, ironically. He didn't just tell her to be careful, he flat out told her that simply wanting to talk is dangerous, which seems a tad extreme. I don't know, maybe he is traumatized. XD

But she has the necessary strength to back up her ideology.
she hates violence though, it's a huge part of her character

additionally, the people in this story doesn't have scouter like in dragon ball and they can't see someone else magic power to realize how strong someone like Haruka is, they have to either be extremely strong as well to realize it from instinct or feeling or have special ability that allow them to realize it (some of the characters in this series have special skill)

the author also wrote this series that normal mage or even high end mage, is bad at melee combat when compared to pure fighers and most of them actually do, Haruka is the only special exception

which is why Cody said what he said

I read the WN because LN ver. only have 2 volume so far, and english ver. of the LN only 1 vol. and i'm invested into this series story, but about Haruka
she can't actually utilize her body potential completely, though it doesn't make her any weaker, and it's also the reason why she held back by a TON, because she doesn't want to accidentally hurt or kill other people, which is why she doesn't use the same spell she uses in chapter 1 when she first tried magic

also Haruka actually stupidly powerful that her opponent seems like nothing when she actually uses her everything to try to kill someone (which she will do at some point because she got super mad and it darken her mind)
