I mean, the only thing you can do VS a mass DMCA is to be super anal about the laws, stuff like requiring legit digital signatures, and using the full amount of business days per takedown to process them ,and overall be as much of an asshole as possible in extend of the law when receiving a takedown request, you really can demand a lot of stuff to "make sure" the dmca request is legit. But it's a balancing act for no much gain other than ruining some lawyers day.

Overall, it seems it's over, time to pick up the pieces and grow another head of the hydra.

At this point, I'm beginning to think it might be less of a headache if everyone just dedicated their efforts to Twitter/Pixiv manga
They're not my favorite, but you're not as likely to get a DMCA over them

What happened today at MD will continue, no matter what we do or say. I hate to say this, because I've been here for years as a group leader and avid reader, but now it will either be a slow countdown or a sudden explosion at any moment. All sides of this situation are understandable, but now it's time to pick up the pieces and reorganize. The truth is, we group leaders will have to look for places to make the works we translate available, whether in online readers or for dl, and readers will have to look for places to read them, whether in friendly places or not.

A brazilian website just announced that more than 700 titles were impacted and it will increase. And the chances of many of these things becoming lost media are very high.

Keep the channels open, as long as we can talk, we can rendezvous.

I have almost 3.5k mangas on my library, never got around organizing them, guess when I do I'll find a bunch got nuked lol

Worst part will get to the series I can't find anywhere else, example, Suito-to!, which I'm not sure is anywhere else

It's such a shame as sites like Mangadex and batoto(og) makes it so much easier to discover new series and with how they link to official translations, artist social media and other avenues of purchase, it has never been as easy or comfortable to get involved and support both artists and publishers. I really have a difficult time seeing this as anything other than a net negative for everyone involved in the long term.

I guess the series I primarily follow, Dark Gathering, is a bit better off compared to others since it is on the shonen jump site and app and it does have English volumes (which I am current on)...but I hate being 18 chapters behind and waiting for the manga to catch up here in the states. Sure, it is a monthly series and we could eventually catch up, but I like staying current and talking about the chapter with others here and other sites. That's what these oldies don't fucking get. I hope Kredim continues somehow in a different area for this series. Its going to be a lot more boring otherwise...

Fight back how? At the very best, MD is in a grey area, and realistically, this is illegal, especially since some of the manga taken down have official English translations. Yes, you only get to read them once the volumes come out, but regardless, the publishers have every right to demand their manga be taken down.

That faq section on comeso is absolutely ridiculously condescending. This does confirm that most of the big publishing companies both japanese and korean use a third party for dmca. Probably explains why it is so heavy-handed as well as they probably would have an even less nuanced view considering their business model.

And of course they are German.

I have a feeling this is less of a "we got hired by the companies to do this", but a "hey, we have this case ready, want to hire us to enforce it?". We used to have "law firms" doing the same, building cases about various sites and individuals and then approaching the ip holders, if they were interested in hammering them down. Scummy behaviour, luckily it got cracked down on, as prebuilding the cases like that was illegal. Need a warrant first, essentially.

it's not the first, and it certainly wont be the last, but this one hits much harder than all the site strikes ive seen in my time as a reader.

sure we're losing alot of big name, recognizable series, but seeing a ton of series that never would have seen light of day if not for the work of scanlation groups and mangadex itself, just getting fully nuked back into obscurity is depressing.
