It’s back to #lurk and xdcc again.
Ah the good (?) old days of #lurk. Those days when I still had a dial-up connection and, depending on the series, it would take longer to dl a chap than it would to read it (I'm looking at you Gantz).

That's still honestly a better option for me than Discord, which everybody seems to want to push, but I don't and can't use. Then again, it's been a long time since I initially tried. Maybe they've moved on from the idiocy of immediately locking a newly made account and then the only method of verification accepted was for me to give them a cell phone number, which I had no interest in doing. Their justification for it when I contacted them was that my IP had been flagged for previous suspicious activity. I concluded that was bullshit, since my IP was a) not a public IP, but personal and b) an IP I had been using for longer than Discord had been in existence. If all they cared about was verification, there are a number of ways you can do it (and many sites also allow), including sending an email with a one time code to the damn account you just contacted me on, but forcing ONLY one situation where I give them more PI felt a bit sketchy. I'm sure it's all above board, but I'm not a fan of that kind of thing. /ends old man rant.

What's interesting is that some manga has gotten hit, but not all chapters were removed.

I haven't read the whole list yet, but I noticed that some titles are available on two apps: Manga UP and K manga.
Neither is particularly good for binging new series, K manga especially has a "pay-wall" on lots of chapters for mamy series, but they DO have ways to read for free a lot of content. Manga UP also has the nice feature of leaving "unlocked" chapters available indefinitely, rather than for a week/a month like other apps (they often split chapters though). Unfortunately both seem to lack tankobon extras and the such

I highly recommend blocking official publishers. These groups are utter trash anyway, the quality is shockingly subpar for people who want money per chapter.

I am not paying for manga moving forward. Congratulations Azuki, comicKey and co, your actions will now cost authors their hard-earned money. And for the record, yes, I am a person who buys the official manga on Google Books if I like the story well enough.

Or, I guess, I was.

MangaUp also has a lot of really stupid censorship and tends to do things like throw out colour pages. It's honestly one of the worst of these official publishers and that's really saying something.

App-wise, probably. Certain features designed to be user-friendly may cause some issues (like scrolling to the next chapter "paying" with EXP my mistake).
Quality-wise, I think Alphamanga is worse. Their translations are often inconsistent and in need of even basic proof-reading.

Well damn, I just filed a report on why most of the chapters for Someone's Girlfriend got removed, and now I know why. Please disregard my last report Moderators.

This is a real shame, but I can't say that I didn't see it coming eventually. This type of business is rife with adversity. I will continue to support as long as there is something to read, but this is unfortunate news indeed.

Why does Mangadex even comply with these DMCA threats in the first place? They're already a piracy site, they can just ignore them and keep going, can't they? What are even the downsides of not complying? If the admins are serious about their own privacy and the reliability of operating the site than it shouldn't really matter. Otherwise, it's interesting what are the pressure points that apparently worked.

The goal, as far as I can tell, was to upload fan translations for manga with no official translation, and when it's the case, to redirect to the publisher website when possible.

However the publisher decided that wasn't enough and that you shouldn't enjoy things that they don't even attend to sell, because like a children would say : 'don't touch it, it's mine'.

The most civil approach to piracy was refused, now it's back to the old ways I guess. :salute:

Welp, this is extremely fucking shit and I sincerely hope it comes back to bite publishers in the ass, both Japanese and English ones.

I bought a lot of official translations after reading the scanlations first. Even bought (and still buying as they come out) volumes for a few series straight from Japan since they have no official English and I'm sure there are a lot of people in the same boat. These sales wouldn't have been made in the first place without the effort of scanlation groups.

This is not to mention the host of issues with English publishers. Volumes are released with huge gaps between them or get delayed time and again, translations made by paid "professionals" that are often worse than what a couple of people can come up with for free, region locking, scummy pricing practices and chapter splitting, censorship or just straight up dropping series. You want to curb piracy? Fix your fucking service system first instead of going scorched earth in the vain hope of scrapping some pennies.

That's enough of my energy spent here. Enjoy the hollow shell, y'all. I genuinely hope it lasts but I know it won't. I'll look back on my time with mangadex fondly. Nothing lasts forever
I understand your bitterness but for me, there are still plenty of mangas I can read here, so I'll continue coming here for that.
For the ones that have been removed, I'll go elsewhere and I'll keep on buying the ones I like just like I did before.
Fact is many chapters are still being uploaded right now, so my guess is that not all translators wish to move. And in any case, they can also upload their work on other sites so nothing should be lost for users. I can still discover new stuff here, anyway.
My guess is that those who must feel the most frustrated right now are the ones that volunteered to maintain this site.

posted this in another thread now post it here too for posterity and dialog (with some heavy edits):

well, all of you here are english readers (I am too read mostly in english), but MD had chapters translated to many-many-many more languages, like russian for example (which is my mothers tongue). russia is a country which has very small market for manga, has no or very little stuff translated officially to russian in online services and most of the time stuff is licenced and translated for official release in physical form, and for it it needs to be "a big thing", like biggest of shounens like naruto, bleach, one peace, OPM, chainsaw man, some big isekais gets published too as some of the most popular slice of life. and generally speaking it's hardly even a one percent of all the manga that exists that got an official license and release here.

like if I would like to read "Houkago Teibou Nisshi" I must go to fan scanlaters as there is 0 chance of it being officially licensed and translated to russian (well it was translated as far it was in english thanks to enthusiasm of a scanlater group which done it for free and quite well).

and here is the thing, yes some companies like shueisha operates in russia, at least they let us read new chapters in english, but there is no way to make in app purchases at all, and app only lets you read manga in full once. other services either does not operate at all, or you cannot pay for them (because of sanctions reasons, because of it yoy cannot buy anuthing from japan too) which is honestly the same thing as not operating. and you are kind of out of options except to go straight to pirate cites. and if not for enthusiasm of fan scanlaters you will still miss on a lot of manga that will never be translated to english.

and yeah, all the chapters russian scanlaters have done are gone now too. like most of the 1000 of titles hit will never be officially translated to russian at all. it's a very small niche scene here, not a lot of money in it. it has zero to none exposure to general audience and because of that licensers only license stuff if there is a sure chance to make money (see chainsaw man or naruto, this will sell, and even so there will not be a huge volume published, like several hundreds to a several thousands of copies for a tome of the series). so it's not just english side of the cite that was hit.
