I think the reason people don't know that he is an S-rank (former) is because he went up so fast, worked so hard, and never cared about fame... This guys were framed as villains but technically they didn't do anything wrong, some guy was standing back when looking at a young girl risk her life, is the way it was done and thei rbehaviour that made them appear like some villains, and of course pretending she goes with them, okay to denounce a possible slave farming, but they only wanted her because she is a beauty, that was more clear.

The reason because MC is unknown when being high rank is simple, he is not a conqueror, he is not a monster slayer, a hero or a saviour, his job was stone mining and retrieval, he brought fuel.
When a important job is not much lauded, who in this topic know the best oil company in the real world and the face of their best emplouyee or CEO? The only one I can think of is Bruce Willis character in Armageddon, that again, isn't the real world.
To end it, in this work a dungeon explorer is seen as a low tier job in Japan, for freeter and the likes.

For those of us who feel like the whole world is stupid, all the people are manipulative jerks, but you're the richest/most competent man alive and suddenly find a hot teenager to live with you- Then it's super relatable! I am thinking no one knows because he didn't really care about the fame that came with being the top ranked adventurer in Japan (or the world, can't remember which it is). He just wanted to live a comfortable life by making a bunch of money for him and his girlfriend so that he can retire and they would be set for the remainder of their days. He definitely accomplished getting a ton of money and he could live comfortably if he just upped and never did this again, but he lost the girl. I also imagine that the guild guy who stole the gf could have had something to do with both MC's fame as well as gaslighting the girlfriend, but I guess we will see.
