What I was talking about was the author defying such suspension to the point at which one could reasonably expect it to be undone--under the belief it could never happen because the reader's too simple to question anything.

I guess some people would still have their preferences and limits when it comes to buying in to a story's beginning.

Don't worry about their opinion, their emphasis on framing people who don't agree with them as "simple" gives away the fact that their arguments are built on castles of sand.
