This is for all things J.R.R. Tolkien wrote about his unique world of Eä and the works derived from it. Surprised there wasn't a thread about it.

One thing I really dislike about discussion of the films - I mean it is a completely original scene sure in the movie, where the Witch King breaks Gandalf's staff, but damned am I, if I have not run into scores upon scores of people saying "How come a maiar loses to a man" and yet how did Sauron with the bloody Ring of Power lose...

This thread is going to be my Ring. My 2000nd post.

And indeed into this thread, in the surface of this thread, I shall pour all of my lore, madness, mania and will to become the mayor-for-life of all Mangadex. One thread to Tolkien them all!

Anyway - wizards have beards, and Tolkien wrote about a few wizards, so back on topic.

Still bent about them not including Tom Bombadil in the movies.

Why would they have included him. Aside from just delivering "the world is deeper and older than you know" what does he actually deliver to the plot?
Nothing.
It is a very good portion to cut. Similar how PJ fused Glorfindel's role in rescuing the hobbits and Aragorn from the Nine with Arwen's. Latter has so little role in the books and the former, while heavy in the meeting and once again existing just to hilight the long history of the elves, doesn't really serve a role further on.
It's a clear decision, when you think about it like that.

Not arguing with any of this, but he was a nice connection to 'a bunch of history preceded all these things', and I liked him as a character.

But yeah, he basically acts as a Deus Ex Machina that Tolkien has to write back out, so I understand the reasoning.

War of the Ring.

What are your opinions on the other goals than Minas Tirith.
How many of them did Sauron actually expect to succeed and how many of them were there just to tie down/distract his enemies?
In my opinion, he only expected Gondor to fall and with luck the Lonely Mountain, everything else would be bonus.

But adding to this topic. Another misconception people believe: Galadriel could hold back Sauron.
This all is based on "it would take Sauron himself to take down Lothlorien" and yes, this is actually true.
As in it would take Sauron (without the ring) to take down Galadriel (with her ring), for his armies to actually take down Lothlorien.
Similar to as it was to Rivendel.

If Sauron got the ring, the protection of both Rivendel and Lothlorien would be taken away and they would be just a stronghold in a valley and a forest.

As powerful and knowledgeable as Galadriel was, she wasn't anything that special in the end. She never even had a song battle with Sauron!
