What am I ignoring? He never initiates the physical affection. He never initiates the dates (this episode is debatable) except the fireworks festival. He never praises Aya or explicitly tells her he loves her. To someone as insecure and affection starved as Aya, yeah I think it reads like he's w/ her b/c she's there (it's casual) rather than b/c she's the one.

So I updated my translation b/c I don't like translating the Russian idiom that way b/c I don't think that's accurate. All of which to say that we're arguing about translations of a language neither of us speak, which means I'm gonna defer first to what feels most consistent w/ the art, second to the most consistent across multiple, and third to what's most consistent across the story. Like the Russian translation uses "fall apart" instead of "doomed", which is also the language of the chapter title and the visual metaphors.

Which, as we've discussed endlessly, is ambiguous on who initiated and paid for the date. Yuu can be not a jerk by wanting to stick w/ what he thinks is Aya's plan. Been thinking of how Hikari is also sometimes like this - asking him to the festival than saying never mind but he knows she wants it, and Aya's always flirty in a way that he's never sure how serious she is. All of which to say is that Yuu wanting to stick to the original plan doesn't necessarily communicate anything more than that he's used to dealing with these types of situations.

B/c the way the scene is written, there's no indication she isn't - the tone stays serious throughout.

The second translation is what my grandma would mean when she'd say that idiom. Which "fall apart" is the connotation of that "break up", which goes back to translation is hard man.

Your argument revolves around your own intepretation of what she was saying back in 29 (even though she was simply responding to his "Next week there's a fireworks festival! ...oh, wait. There's no way you'd wade into a crazy crowd like that."), and even in this interpretation there's nothing indicating that he wasn't inviting her to do "normal things". We even see him doing that at the very least in 26, and we also see them doing "normal things" in this chapter.

If it went "мне на всех плевать" or "плевать я на всех хотела", it would mean what you wrote the second time. But "мне на всё плевать" means "I don't give a damn about anything".

I think the lack of previous episodes showing Yuu and Aya just walking around like Aya is picturing here also supports that this is a wish.

He's a nice enough guy to insist on doing something he thinks Aya wants to do. Eta: from the perspective of someone who is insecure, this can read as basic behavior for him (autopilot) rather than strong indication that he specifically wants to spend time w/ them.

I think it's kinda always the case when portraying a couple in the middle of the crowd - all focus is on them, while other people are there just as a background. As for the second thing, Maruto just expressed that these extra chapters (+the next untranslated one) were made because he decided to add a little more of "Yami-senpai's dere that he couldn't fully capture in the doujin version", i.e. he only covered the main points of that flashback. Not to forget that this chapter is literally them going on a "normal" date.

Not to forget that this chapter is literally them going on a "normal" date.

But has no handholding walk in a crowd scenes, which are a staple of every romance ever including Aya's dream scene.

He's refusing the sex b/c he's a decent enough guy to think that she really wants to go to the movie and is just teasing him about the hotel. Which in insecure spiral brain is kinda like how Yuu says yes to a date w/ his kohai or to all the setups - he's a nice guy who will go along w/ things to make other people happy.

There are patterns that build into behavior patterns that authors rely on to build consistent characterization. Which I very much think Maruto has been doing here - otherwise the characters, especially Aya, wouldn't feel realistic.

you seem to be missing that she was lying with her back to him in that scene:

Which means Yuu couldn't see her expression, which Maruto/Aya uses precisely for these moments where I think she's dead serious and you think she's obviously joking.

There's also the context, where Yuu and Aya are going back and forth on Yuu trying to convince her this is serious and Aya saying she doesn't believe him & she closes the exchange here:

Yami: “What?”
Yuu: “This isn’t… just a whim, right?”

Yuu wouldn't be the one asking if it was serious if he thought Aya was serious (even though the reader knows at this point that Aya is all in). So Aya is keeping w/ her other responses - which Yuu has been responding to seriously. But decided by the last time that basically she's broken so she can do whatever she wants.

There's no indication here that Yuu doesn't believe her - just that he truly thinks this is what she wants. Which Aya is encouraging by hiding her face while saying it.
