I'm assuming the deer were eating the crops because they were poisoned. They seem to not be affected by the poison, but the people are, so what better thing to do than eat it before they do.

Feels like it’ll be more coherent when read fully rather than in parts with long gaps per chapter

Wow, the series was really going downhill for a long time, but this chapter was especially awful. It almost felt like it was AI-generated summary of what was to happen in a few chapters in just few pages. It just felt like we skipped quite a few pages to reach that (abrupt) resolution.
