Just imagine her manipulating the fuck out of this guy as she isolates him and cuts him off from everything he once knew. Her mother said the debt was illegal, and without that, they have nothing on him. So he could've refused. He didn't have the spine to do it, but he could've. But at least to me it felt like he did prefer at least most of the deal over rejecting it.

I think it would've been better to reject the deal, and then ask her to make a personal request, without any pressure behind it. He's still have accepted that, but it'd be a much more fair proposition.

even if it is illegal he has no choice. if he refuse it is obvious they will do something to him. remember her family got connections to goverments. He got nothing, he is alone with no backing of anyone.
