Oh it is, but groups can be reported for inactivity and their upload restrictions are lifted if they don't respond to staff emails.
If the group truly is inactive, they wouldn't be producing more translated chapters. If they're still translating chapters, put up upload restrictions and don't upload here anymore, then they deserve to not to be bothered about it either. It feels a bit backwards to have a rule where they are forced to reply within a certain time, or else people will suddenly be allowed to upload your content when you explicitly said no.

If I say no to a service, I don't want to periodically have to confirm my decision just to keep that restriction in place either.

If they didn't upload it while they were active and had the upload restriction on, then they made the decision not to upload here.
Not sure if that matters or not. If a group becomes inactive (everywhere), you can make an inactivity request to staff. They reach out to the group leaders and if no response is given in a couple weeks, upload restrictions are lifted for that group.

The whole point of the policy is to allow uploads of groups that have died. If the group is dead, their upload restrictions don't matter anymore.

Edit: Here's an example of a chapter that was never uploaded to MD that was uploaded through the inactive group policy: https://forums.mangadex.org/threads/done-shirley-ch-18-missing-from-md.2548917/#post-28955736

I understand you might just be trying to explain the current policy. However I do feel that intent matters a lot. If your intention was to not upload on MangaDex, then it doesn't make sense for your content to get uploaded there anyway, just because you don't log into MangaDex anymore and you don't log into the group specific email anymore (because...the group's disbanded).

Regardless of the situation, if you are the group's leader and you put up upload restrictions, then you give out a clear intent that you want your uploads to be managed only by you or your group's members. Just assuming that they forgot to upload whatever they had left and considering it a service to upload it for them after they go MIA, shouldn't be considered the most likely assumption.

Again, you shouldn't have to periodically confirm your intentions just to keep the restriction in place.

Not really. Keeping upload restrictions in place after groups die defeats the purpose of the "dex" part of mangadex.

Just assuming that they forgot to upload
It's not about that either. See my edit in the previous message. TSP never uploaded any of Shirley to MD. When TSP died and staff confirmed they were inactive, users were able to upload the missing chapter.

By that logic, it would also defeat "the dex part of mangadex" if they do respond that they don't want their translated chapters uploaded to MangaDex and MangaDex respects their wishes by not changing the upload restrictions.

Either you care about the scanlators' wishes to not wanting their content on MangaDex or you don't. :cautious:

Edit: I get that you're trying to say that this is what is currently happening and you wish that this possibility was more widely known by having it written somewhere.
I'm saying that I disagree with that practice and that it shouldn't be happening, because it's hypocritical to both care enough about the scanlators' intentions by having the upload restrictions and keeping them in place if they respond, but on the other hand they're willing to disregard it when they can't get a hold of the scanlator. The "dex" in MangaDex shows what MangaDex wants. But you can't always get what you want.

We can agree to disagree. ;)

I do right up until they stop being scanlators.

Besides, it's not like MD gives groups every little thing they want. Paywallers are banned, long upload delays are also against the rules I think. Plenty of groups want those things and are denied.

They only get to refuse to have their content on MangaDex so long as they keep producing content? That's pretty messed up.
And again, it still doesn't resolve the contradiction where their wishes are still respected if they respond to the email/DM.

Just because MangaDex acknowledges the rights and wishes of scanlators, doesn't mean they automatically relinquish their own rights to refuse content on their platform.

Scanlators should be able to decide if they want their content to be on MangaDex, because without them there wouldn't be any content to begin with.
MangaDex should be able to decide if they allow content on their platform, because without them the platform wouldn't exist.

It's really not that complicated...

me in the sidelines waiting for my turn to talk
Awww, please don't! Just because we're posting, doesn't mean you can't! (y)
