It's always been popular trope to raise stakes or tension.

The audience doesn't want something bad to happen to a friendly or likeable character and it's a legitimate threat to the heroes.

The difference is in how it's done, and poor writers spam it.

As it stands the dissonance between what's being presented and what it purports to represent is annoying and immersion-breaking.

And if that friend turns out to be a scholar of some kind instead of some redneck or whatever that found her in the forest I'm going to scream.

Well I'm not a linguist or a fluent Japanese speaker, but that seems like a conflict between the literal phonetics of the Gyaru dialect compared to standard Japanese, versus the cultural shorthand of conflating it with the Valley Girl dialect of English.
