So Erica is some sort of monster... but what kind? Will she be powerful enough to end our precious Mermaid??? Admittedly the power balance seems a bit confusing? If Erica can take out Shiori but can't take out Miko, yet Asami thinks Shiori could have killed Miko but not Erica? Or is it that Erica is powerful enough for one on one battle with Shiori or Miko? Azami doesn't seem like she's planning to take on Miko though.

Because Shiori freezes up while facing off with Erica, like she figures out just exactly what Erica is but then thinks the idea might be ridiculous? I wonder if she doesn't continue out of blatant disregard to her own safety, choosing to keep Hinako safe as her priority. Or, is Erica a creature so rare and are her powers incredibly effective only towards Mermaids that Shiori doesn't think it possible that Azami could find a being like her?

How awful this thing is progressing in romance and GL, not even because Hinako said that Shiori is important does she at least return the hug or say something like thanks for coming, or something like that. Six years and the development of their relationship is trash, because at this point it hasn’t been able to actually develop their love properly. You can barely count on one hand the decent moments of Hinako and Shiori, and this one that could have been an exception ended up being a one-sided interaction with Shiori worried and Hinako flat, not reacting. Romance-wise, this thing is moving terribly, and honestly they should take the GL tag off, because to hold a romance story with so few loving moments, this GL is really badly written.

Based on just the content I wouldn't call this a yuri series... and I'm fine with that, stories don't need to be yuri to interest me. There's like one promise-bite-kiss that suggests this isn't about Hinako and her two youkai foster mommies/aunts.

Hinako had those thoughts more than because of suicide, and even in the anime you can see that she's already afraid of dying from the moment of the yokai encounter, and with Azami it's noticeable. I'm not saying she doesn't have depression, but the whole wanting-to-die thing isn't as present anymore because if it were still her main reason, she would have said yes to Azami without a doubt. But even though she understood, she decided to choose Shiori and said that it's important, showing that depression and suicide aren't what drive her anymore. Also, in chapter 47 she says she doesn't feel sad anymore but still wants to be with her family; it's different being depressed and wanting to commit suicide because you have nothing to live for, versus wanting to see your family and stop saying you wanted to die. She explicitly says she wants to see her family, which shows she's not as depressed as you'd say, friend. Second, the author has already been doing something for 6 years that is supposedly GL and there hasn’t been any reciprocity in it. The anime ends up showing what could have been the start of Shoiori and Hinako getting closer, and instead of developing that, it goes on to do a long and unnecessary Miko arc to teach Hinako a lesson, which could have easily been done in a single chapter with another story to reach the same point. Then, after they talk and Hinako is already smiling, looking more lively and expressive, having the school festival as the perfect moment to at least give them that time together to show more closeness, they decided to start the Azami thing and long the anime out again without giving development to both of them. I’m not saying they’re kissing already, that really wouldn’t be right, but I’m saying that for a GL manga and for the anime to end at a point where they seem to start getting close, they go ahead and put arcs that drag this out with drama and don’t develop the couple from which they make money selling image merch of dates that won’t actually happen and a draft that shows with images that the two of them are going to get married. What I mean is that it could have not said that this was yuri/GL and just left it as slice of life, and it would still work, but it has a label that after 6 years and 60 chapters hasn’t progressed enough to make those labels it claims worth it. If you remove those labels, the story works and turns out fine, because you can develop it without having to show anything romantic, but if you put a label on it, after so much time, you end up without making any serious progress on that, and you start developing arcs that just tediously drag things out. Even Watoshi managed to get Claire to show a little bit of reciprocation toward Rei in small moments, whereas here, with more chapters, Hinajo—the main character who is supposed to end up with Shiori because the author showed it in the drafts and the image of their wedding, and because it’s GL—just sees Shiori as a friend, like the first 20 chapters of any random yuri. You could say that this work shouldn't have been GL or romance, and everything else works with what’s been written so far
