I'm a sucker for this trope of "exploring a dungeon then stumbling on people/monsters who didn't get so bothered and just carved their path through the walls".

Tower dungeon had an amazing one as well with the gecko-woman that steals their backpack.

That stuff is a great way to give the reader a moment of pause. "Wait, this thing is so much bigger than we realised ! How much other stuff have we missed because it's out of sight ? Are the protagonists suckers for following already established paths rather than making their own ?"
