They're typically the least harmful of the romantic rivals because you know they almost always never win. They also provide a bit more comedy relief and expand the female cast. As a female you can get them in differing scenarios compared to the male love interests. And because they're a lesbian, you know its not going to be reciprocated because someone else is on their minds.
