How much of this is actually how getting into Japanese highschool feels like (ik they do have to qualify like a college) and how much of it is cuz the writer regrets setting the series in middle school?

I definitely think the writer drifted towards them acting like highschoolers at a certain point because those extra couple years of maturity makes them much more interesting to write for.

Like, bro, if getting into fucking high school got you this stressed then college is going to kill you.

I could say something about Japan's suicide rates and how stressed out middle & high school students are in the country... but I'm pretty sure we all know. Yeah, just yeah. It is what it is. It doesn't stop at the country's education system, but just like how the culture is in general. Tons of positives and negatives, but on the negative side the excessive stress and poor mental is one of the major downsides.
