Honestly, I think it's neither. I don't speak Japanese, so this is entire conjecture, but I don't think they were dating, everyone thinks that they are. So I think they want to try to tell people that they weren't together, despite the fact that everyone will continue to believe that they are, and that both want to be together. So will they break up (this translation), or will they show people that they broke up (the other translation) implying that they already did it in the time skip? Both translations have weird aspects to them; in this one 'concubine' stands out as a major weirdness (are they in feudal China?), so i don't know who to trust...
alr so the raw says お別れをみせるしかないのかなSo is she proposing that they break up (this translation), or that they show people that they broke up (the other translation) implying that they already did it in the time skip? Here's the thing, this translation is actually better in some parts than the other one. Some people were really confused about Erika's new haircut and thought that was a new character, but in the japanese Komichi clearly calls her Erika, which the Gay Sailor Scans translation omitted, which made things even more confusing. You put out a shitter version of something that's already out, what are you hoping to accomplish here tbh?
In some parts you claim, that still doesn't justify sniping. Here's the thing, this translation is actually better in some parts than the other one. Also, the part where Neko is talking about her grandmother is probably closer to being correct in this version. In Gay Sailor Scans they translated as "but my granny is my real granny. But she's dead now", but in the RAWs she doesn't explicitly says this. She says "おばあちゃんは違ったよ. 死んじゃったけど", which translating literally would mean "Grandma was [different/not the same], but she's dead now", and this can be interpreted in many ways.
It can be interpreted as Gay Sailor Scans did, with Neko saying her grandmother is not the same as their parent as in "she's my actual grandmother", but it can also be interpreted as "Grandma's reason for not coming to the festival was different", meaning that she intended to come despite Neko being a mistress' child, but couldn't for some reason (was hospitalized/had already died).
In my opinion, the later one makes more sense, it fits better with the "but she's dead now" line that follows it, as well as emphasizing that Neko and her grandma got along well, as shown by how Neko is always talking about her, and how she's grasping her cushion made with fabric that resembled her grandma's cushion when she talks abot her death.
Why would concubine fit the situation more? Anyone with Akebi's personality at that age would be shocked if a classmate said her mother was a mistress, with no further context given to enforce the other interpretation it's a nonsensical quote in a modern settingJust to clear up the raw discussion:
妾 (mekake) literally means concubine/mistress. Neko comes from a super traditional family background, so using "concubine" fits her character and explains why Akebi reacts the way she does on the page. Downplaying it misses the point of the lore.
As for お別れをみせる (o-wakare wo miseru), sure, miseru is "to show", but page transitions exist for a reason. Having page 15 end with "I guess our only choice is to break up..." creates the intended dramatic setup that immediately resolves on page 16 when she mentions the drama club. Translating it as a past event ("show people we broke up") just makes the dialogue sound awkward and creates weird plot confusion that isn't actually there in the Japanese.
We localize for narrative flow and how characters actually talk, not line-by-line dictionary dumps. Enjoy whichever release you like!
Well the difference being the previous “snipes” were machine translated slop. This at the least seems to have effort put into it. I personally don’t get sniping culture being an issue unless the template I.e. the cleaning/redrawing was stolen from by another group and or it’s just a really shit translation which for instance uses AI to redraw or machine translation that isn’t coherent like the previous few.In some parts you claim, that still doesn't justify sniping.
Akebi was dropped recently because of sniping, is this person prepared to take on Akebi full time like Gay Sailor Scans? They just came here and dropped without even a note or whatever, it's still hella disrespectful. Did they communicate with GSS? They don't even have a history of translating anything, and I'm supposed to accept it because they maybe translated a few lines better that they could have just put in the comments, nah that's nonsense tbh. So let's say we agree this chapter is better and GSS drops it and then this rando with no history of fan TLs disappears on us, what happens then? At least a simple explanation given the recent sniping drama will make sense, but nope.
It's not a bad idea to have 2 translations and people decide which one they want, but there should be clear communication imo. 2Deep scans dropped Akebi cause of something similar.
Perhaps this version is better, but I still think there's a right way to do things after all the sniping drama a few months back and this is not it. A simple note goes a long way.
Come on, there's a messaging system on Mangadex. You could've sent a message or even a @CyrraTo anyone who's mad about this, I really couldn't care less. My original plan was to contact the guy behind GSS, but there isn't even any contact info available.
Then why didn't you step in when 2deep dropped it? Why wait till someone else picks it up? There was a period where we had no good translations within the past year.Truth is, I've been translating Akebi into Portuguese for over a year now, so turning what I'd already done in Portuguese into English takes virtually no effort at all.
Are you people slow? Re-read my message, it's not a matter of them being slop. The problem is the sniping itselfWell the difference being the previous “snipes” were machine translated slop.
