That is an understandable fear of hers, and speaks well of her. Especially since her type of youkai have a reputation for devouring their mates, and that presents a bit of a problem given she also wants to live out a long, peaceful life with Toda. Is it an instinct, or is it just something they do? She doesn't seem to know, and her guides do not have the same issues as her.

Hey, at least now they can make some nice grilled veggies.
Thanks a lot. Now I crave for the grilled asparagus. They really go well with the grilled steaks.

My bad, "sapience" Mr. Pedant. The things humans see as "fulfillment" are biological, they do not spring from consciousness, consciousness is an after the fact explanation.
Since I'm Mr. Pedant, I'll have you back that statement up with something concrete. After all, it is quite bold of you to say that for example, one's desire to work on interesting projects is purely biological and not at all related to the way consciousness works in humans.

Pg 8 NO!

We've won the battle, but at the cost of seeing Yotsuyu cry, I feel like we lost. Hey Author, I wouldn't mind if you pulled an asshat move like memory wiping, to make the tears stop and pain go away, and reset everything to the way it was before it was fucked by those guys, but that's probably asking for too much.

No. You'll take your spoder girl character growth arc and LIKE IT.

Besides, if that happens there's the possibility she finds out again and has another sad time.

There's no "pure biology", as this is a dualistic conception, where you are separating the mind and the body, life and its environment, when they are one and the same, consciousness is most likely an emergent property of human biology. Consider that human beings evolved as dopaminergic nomads, so the concept of "freedom" and what is "interesting" are built on top of that using an expanding set of values that align with that mode of being. Consider that a plant instead dominates its local environment, it has no need for locomotion, so imagine how a higher mind would operate under those circumstances, how different its values would be from our own. The work of Antonio Damasio is a fascinating look into human consciousness, highly recommend.

But this is logically the same as living in some D&D universe and insisting there's nothing supernatural about dudes who can set you on fire by mumbling a few words. Technically it can be true, if you define "nature" as everything that exists anywhere. It doesn't change the fact that it kind of takes a special kind of being to be capable of that and even if the ability is an emergent property of the simplest natural laws, generalizing like that is just obfuscating the argument purely for the sake of pretending distinctions don't exist or don't matter.
