@Ghede Not wrong. I once blacked out from dehydration, and my last thought before passing out was that I wished my toilet had an automatic flush sensor like what you see at grocery stores. Mind, I wasn't even in the bathroom at the time...

And it looked like she was outside (backyard?). Somehow, that makes it even more sad than if she'd died in the fire.
@Randomizer just like what @deathmailrock said, they are dead. There are only the accumulated regrets of that said person, the only way forward is to move on.

1)she's passed on, The man lives his live, marries the cutey childhood friend.
2)she comes back, They become happy, and happy ever after.
3)she comes back, They are happy, The man marries childhood friend, she passes on with no regrets.
