This happens in real life as well. A lot of your life is decided by your parents' wealth and well-being. Even if you have some amazing skill, if you don't already have money, it will be very hard to make money. You won't get hired because you look poor. Your health will only continue to get worse. A poor person most likely will not have an education. If you can't prove your smarts and qualification by way of school diploma, getting hired becomes far less likely, especially in today's job market. For especially poor people, crime is often the only realistic option. There are people who have made it from rags to riches but it is incredibly rare.

A lot of people also fall to drugs. They can eat up all your money very quickly and even throw your entire existence into jeopardy. A drug addict will not get a job. They will have a hard time finding an apartment, assuming they can even pay for one. Quitting drugs is incredibly difficult and requires a lot of willpower. A surprising amount of alcoholists are actually quite smart. They just got caught up in drugs and messed their life up.

Manga use these "poor genius" characters often because those types of characters make for a satisfying and interesting plot.

It feels a little heavy handed... was it really necessary to dispense the guy's entire life story in the first couple pages for exposition? We could've figured all that out just by showing their messy apartment and the sick girl.

MC has a photographic memory but seems to lack strong critical thinking skills needed to make that talent useful. That's why he and the detective girl make such a good pair. Because she makes up for his weaknesses.

This sort of manga appeals to Japanese people because they still believe in bootstraps rhetoric, and also because this sort of really messed up situations actually happen.

i wonder, ive seen someone says that this reminds them of liar game and the first chap does give that vibe, but yeah this isnt that similar, i kinda doubt that the mc will continue with a heart of gold like the mc of liar game, throught its a detective manga i normally like those a lot so lets see.
But now i wonder how far the crimes will go, we start with an information selling scheme, thats not the most hardcore crime ever but depending on how the manga wants to go it could get pretty dark real quick, i wouldnt be against that but i hope they keep things grounded, if it gets too over the top it gets boring.

This isn’t 1970s, the economic disparity on a global scale prevents hard workers from actually being able to get rich, and that includes talented people. As others have said you need connections to escape the (middle)barely not homeless class
