For everyone who says that it's stupid to go to war while your country is starving, it's not.

Imagine your country has more people than it can feed. The solution is to secure more food or have fewer people. And the people who aren't getting enough food aren't the nobles or wealthy, but the poor. Starvation historically lead to rioting much of the time - off the top of my head it was a major cause of the French and Russian revolutions. So you have limited food and a bunch of angry starving peasants whom you're afraid might revolt. What do you do?

You find an enemy. You say, "this country is selfishly hoarding all the food that we need." You conscript the peasant men and tell them that they are fighting to secure food for themselves, for their families, for their country(though admittedly that concept didn't exist in the same way back then), and then you wage a bloody war. You have fewer peasants for sure, and likely more food, so that's your most pressing problem solved.

The foreign (muslim-coded) kingdom approached first, so we know that they find war disadvantageous enough that they would consider an alternative. Land or resource negotiation is definitely the best outcome here. Historically, the caliphate was known for its vast trading networks, its judges, its recordkeeping, and its mathematics. Resource wise, it had gold, salt(EXTREMELY important for food preservation), sugar, and textiles. So it'll be interesting to see what happens here.

At this point, the prince doesn't even see Rachel as a person; she's just a proxy for Marie in his eyes.

As far as the Halidom goes, this diplomat is arrogant and terrible. And up against a known brutal prince. He's lucky the prince didn't cut his head off from that threat and say "my well fed, well trained army vs your admittedly starving nation. Bring it on."

The prince is blinded by his own cultural assumptions here. You can have VERY expensive and lavish feasts using fish, vegetables, and fruit(think the fresh foreign/out of season fruits always being painted because they were exhorbiantly expensive to transport/keep). He's just stuck in a mindset that red meat = expensive.

Marie says it's a big deal, but starving soldiers probably aren't a major concern for a ruler who has been successfully conquering other nations. Even if there weren't mass desertions, a lot as been written about the uselessness of hungry soldiers in preindustrial times.

Honestly though, as far as I'm concerned, they'd be better off getting rid of crown prince entirely and letting Marie be king. Marie is the one who is awesome, why does she need to be attached to that jerkbag in order to get validation?

I like how the guard acknowledged Marie. She is silently but surely rising in people’s eyes.

Also, I like how the author showed spider web when the crowned prince asked the probing question. She is slowly being caught in a web. She has been also spinning her own web of lies.
