For me there is two different concepts there. Two groups working on a same series is ok. There's a lot of cases on different series where that's done and people are not complaining there. So, no problem there, that's not sniping. Sniping is when someone tries to upload the latest chapters on a series already being actively worked on and with a translation that was done fast and without effort. The problem with this, is people that are catching up and while reading, click next and find the low quality tl that ruins the reading experience they were having.

If someone is taking it upon themselves in an honest effort to translate and produce their own work that's one thing, translating is actually fun. But since it's the new chapters, despite it being updated regularly, I have to wonder why? If there are gripes with the quality of the current group, sure, but I don't see anyone expressing dissastisfaction with BB's work yet.

I think if the OP wants to actually get into TL'ing it would be better to stay with already released chapters and compare or ask for feedback or pick up any of the numerous series that actually are dropped and are begging for someone to pick it up. I don't think this is done genuinely, and that's why I'm skeptical.

No, sniping and people taking series even though other people are working on them has always been something that would make people mad at you, long before an awful microblogging site became popular.

On a broad community management view, its wasted effort to be translating something people already are. It also tends to make the people already working on it feel devalued or underappreciated, which will kill momentum in a passion-driven project like this. So it's also, from a community self-policing and sustainability level, behavior you don't want to encourage. A low-quality effort, like this one, is also a really bad thing to encourage on a popular and already established series. Cause it's faster to do something like this, and you're now setting up a race to the bottom if it's successful and praised.

The day something like this isn't met with annoyance is the day the community will become unable to sustain itself.

Well, this a lot of bitching and moaning about etiquette and what not, but I can't be arsed to jump into that. I will say that etiquette standards exist for a reason so it's generally useful to be mindful of them.
