First of all there was no need for different species of humans to exist simultaneously for the instincts that lead to prejudice to be useful. All it needs to do is create unity and harmony within the group, evolution doesn’t care whether there are any legitimately different species occupying the same niche, even if there were no other groups it would most likely be an evolutionary beneficial mindset.

Also I’m not “countering” the point that discrimination and prejudice is bad. I agree that it’s bad, even in a primitive world I would prefer that humans didn’t evolve to tend towards such behaviour, even if it would’ve helped the species overall.

I’m bringing it up because the original comment did. Discrimination being bad has nothing to do with its origin.

For example if someone is born as a sadistic psychopath that enjoys seeing others harmed, it isn’t their fault in some metaphysical moral sense. However that doesn’t mean that they don’t need to be stopped and stripped of their ability to do harm.

I wouldn’t just say that our instinctive tendency toward prejudice and discrimination can be argued as good or in any way beneficial at all in today’s world. It has no benefit since humans don’t end up in life and death situations, nor do they have the same need to not be alone to survive. These instincts are the roots that sprouted into dogmatic and destructive societies and almost all world-spanning religions. We don’t need it, in fact we should actively work to remove it.

Where did I say it was you arguing for it? That entire comment was framed at the other person's original point, and I don't believe I ever once claimed you were arguing in favor as they were, nor was I trying to paint you with that brush by association.

Any potential benefit that "prejudice" would have for the human species has long since passed out of favor. And that other person trying to take prehistoric upsides calibrated for an entirely different type of world and environment and applying them to modern moralistic/societal frameworks is, honestly, coming across as being edgy for the sake of being edgy. It has no reasonable place in Yuminella's fictional world or in our own reality, unless the goal is to further divide and sow new discontent and animosity and "fear of the Other".

And it sounds like you and I largely agree on that point, unless I miss my guess.

Thank you very much for the update! It has been so long!

I wondered the same thing when reading the novel, but why did Yumelia's parents never try for a second child or at least adopted one. They shunned their daughter for ~15 years and wanted her to marry INTO another family. Whatever were they planning to do about a successor?

WN, LN and anime all handled the climax of the story (of the first volume) differently, so I am curious what the manga will do. But I guess at the current pace, that will take 1-3 years. Honestly it is astounding that in 6 years the manga only managed to cover ~3/4 of the first light novel volume.

uhhh out of topic, but if I may ask, where can I find the raws for this manga?
The official website, linked on the page of the manga here. And if you want "alternatives": love4u, rawkuma & soraraw have them. Probably some others that I don't know too.

The parts that allowed humans to survive long enough to establish civilization, naturally. The parts that allow humans to continue to survive in a world that is actively trying to kill them. (It's trying to kill everything else, too, so it isn't anything personal)

As to the conditions, varied and many. That is why examination of prejudices is an absolute necessity. If the conditions that brought it about no longer apply (or perhaps in some cases, never applied), then perhaps that prejudice ought to be discarded. A fence built to keep something out only matters if that something exists. If the danger is gone, then maintaining that fence is a waste of time and energy that can be devoted elsewhere.
I think you misunderstand Discrimination and Survival Instinct.

Part of the Survival instinct is isolating unknown things until its clear its safe. Discrimination is to elevate yourself or your group. Its the dark and ugly part of that which is the problem.
Discrimination and Exclusion in this context truly are "weak" and ugly parts of human nature.
Its taken into irrational Prejudice and therefore Yumiella is completely right.

Also calling it bad is still acknowledging it exists and sadly wont ever go away. Its not denying it, claiming it shouldnt exist or pretending it doesnt exist.

Nuance and context are like always an important thing.

"Discrimination and exclusion are born from the weakest and ugliest parts of the human heart."

No, they aren't. They are born from the most essential and vital part of the human experience. They are good things to have. What is not good, however, is to never revisit the reasons why they exist. If we want to move forward as a species, the key is not to banish these things wholesale; that way lies destruction. What we must do is examine our prejudices through the lens of logic, and make a hard determination if such prejudices continue to serve a purpose.

A fence that serves no purpose ought to be removed, but before removing it, we must first understand why it was built to begin with, lest we cast aside something we desperately need.
They are also borne from childish and inane things like the desire to vent frustration, to feel superior, and in more recent and sinister times to divide and cause conflict (look at India and pakistan, for example). Sure, there are cases where "discrimination" as you've kinda loosely put it was used for a survival purpose (for example, the preference for fatter women in Tang Dynasty China as it symbolised bountiful resources) but you've also made a pretty damning generalisation with a fair amount of certainty, which people don't react well to. As with many things in life, making declarations in absolutes often misses the nuances.

I'd argue that if you have to resort to a "stupid example", to echo your phrasing, to try and reinforce a given stance, then it didn't have a strong foundation to begin with. having to make up absurd hypotheticals only makes the claim itself that much more nonsensical.

Anyone arguing in favor of "being prejudiced and discriminatory" as being good things, should have actual sourced data and concrete, real-world historical examples that show clear support for such practices being beneficial to a given population. A stance that controversial requires nothing less, if the person arguing in favor of it wants credibility or to be seen as acting in good faith.

And honestly? You'll have to explain how that's "prejudice" in the first place. That's just a one-off instance of potential threat assessment, which isn't the same thing.
It's a bit dated, but would "don't hug lepers" meet your standards for a good example?

Racism is cool guys. I'm a very logical person.

I guess it's better to read such dumbfuckery than being blind... Or is it?

Can you break down in a longer paragraph how what you are quoting is saying what you mock it as saying using a memetic template? Or, did you compress the thought into another one in order to slap a label on someone else as a way to save cognitive bandwidth? Does this process seem familiar?

no.

so - I realize it's partially on me, but since no one here has actually provided the definition for the word in question, here we go:

Prejudice (noun):
1. a) an irrational attitude of hostility directed against an individual, a group, a race, or their supposed characteristics;
b) [1] an adverse opinion or leaning formed without grounds or before sufficient knowledge;
b) [2] preconceived judgment or opinion;
c) an instance of such opinion or judgment
and that's per Merriam Webster.

"Don't hug lepers" is entirely separate from any of that, because it requires knowledge and understanding of leprosy in order to know why the active behavior of avoiding physical contact is important for one's safety and well-being.
It would be prejudiced, if you saw someone who was disfigured in some way, and then made the decision to avoid them, or outright ostracize them, without knowing whether they had an infectious disease in the first place.

The person who started all this with their comment trying to refute Yuminella's assertion, has gotten the actual definition of "prejudice" incorrect, and built a faulty argument off of that initial error and then perpetuated it ever since.

They have argued this entire time for caution and discretion in the face of an unknown, which is absolutely something worth doing, insofar as information and direct experience is lacking in order to make sound judgments or draw reasonable conclusions about said unknown entity.
But "prejudice" carries a very specific meaning and connotation, and it's represented as negative everywhere you see it used for that reason--it's wholly negative and exclusionary, and it requires a distinct lack of understanding or insight into why negative and exclusionary behaviors are utilized.
Everyone, myself included, has gotten lost in the weeds by allowing the actual word's meaning to go unset, but etymologically speaking, that first person and everyone arguing in favor of their position is incorrect.
If they want to say "it's smart to be careful of shit you don't understand, or that you know means harm or danger to you", then that's all fine and dandy.

But that's not discrimination, and it's not what Yuminella was talking about in this chapter, and to try and represent it as such is erroneous and arguably dangerous on its own, as it perverts language and vocabulary and obfuscates clarity, and thus limits understanding between people.

Which, somewhat ironically, is a tactic used by those that push discrimination and prejudice toward others.

My fault, I wrote most of my comments in this thread at like 3 am so I'm guessing I got confused about who was who or didn't bother to check.

And yes it seems we mostly agree, I honestly didn't really even clock that OP was being edgy, I just assumed he was poorly making a point and I corrected some factual errors while elaborating on the mechanism behind the premise as much as I thought was necessary.

My fault gang.
