Have we actually met the heroine yet? I'd forgotten there was going to be one.
Anyway, theory crafting time; She's totally going to be the MC's love interest, as she loves the little sister as much as the MC (probably because she's also isekai'd and she was her favourite character), and also wanted to help turn her life around. Just my guess. :dogkek:

Instead of "HAVE", this should be a HAD.

mc: "father, were those stories about executed commoners things that really happened?"
the father, not having listened, saying hello axe-handle instead as a total non-sequitur: "did you get shown leniency for your treason, to give face to our noble title?"
mc, somehow not remembering what his question was: "ah, I see. That totally answers my yes/no question"

The literal question Cain asked may have been "Did those stories really happen?" But he doesn't actually care about those specific events. His real question, spoken in subtext, was: "Are people in this country really executed for such minor offences, just because they get branded as treason on a technicality?"

His father understands his meaning, so instead of just answering the explicit question and saying "Yes those things happened", he answers the true question: "Son, use some common sense. If we killed people for merely throwing rocks at walls, you'd have been executed a long time ago. Yes, the law says the punishment for treason is death, but the royal family gets the final say, and they say to be lenient. You should know this, because you've already benefitted from that same leniency."

If you notice, while they said that the hatless man and the rude young boy were charged with treason, and the penalty for treason is death, they never actually said that those people were executed. They were just bringing up those stories, and obscuring the fact that the royal family pardoned them, to frighten Maximilian and to justify punishing him for the attempted kidnapping, without having to officially accuse him of attempted kidnapping.

It's not a non-sequitur, they're just communicating in implication and subtext. Cain couldn't literally ask his real question out loud, because he was worried that questioning the law of the royal family might constitute treason against the royal family, which he now realises could get him killed. His father reassures him that people aren't just getting their heads lopped off for no reason, but also cautions him that he should still be more thoughtful about his actions towards the royal family in future, because they've already shown him serious kindness without him even realising. That's the subtext.

Something I dont get is why is MC surprised at all... He's been living in this world for years now, and studying its laws and customs. Why does he still act like he reincarnated yesterday?

Same for me i'll never fucking survive being isekaied in a fantasy world i'd start killing nobility left and right, and let's not even talk about organized religion.
I can't survive isekai either, mostly because there's no modern toilet lol. I just can't separate myself with modern toilet.

The thing about isekai that always bug me is how after a while mc treats everyone like their buddy, even the king gets reduced to the funny uncle they put their arm over his shoulder. When real nobility, especially medieval ones should be ,”He looks at me funny, death for him”

But what of murder and manslaughter, I might be wrong but you either get convicted for murder or manslaughter, murder requires intent while manslaughter doesn't; intent does matter if it's baked into the law or is a prerequisite to conviction
Honestly, I'd say that further proves their point. Either way you are deemed guilty of murder, but the lack of intent makes it manslaughter, which comes with a lighter sentence.

There’s three. 1st degree is intent and planning, second is intent alone, and third is without intent or plan (manslaughter).

I feel like the conversation was supposed to be a bit more comforting from his dad, but it basically went:

Cain: "Aren't those punishments kind of insane?"
Dad: "Were you charged with treason for your incident with the prince?"
Cain: "No, I guess not, that makes more sense, that's a relie--"
Dad: "Well let me be clear, the law absolutely says you could have been charged for treason. It's only the whims of the royal family that have kept your head on your shoulders. Don't forget that. Thankfully, the (current) monarchs are pretty nice. But yeah you weren't charged with treason. That time."
I noticed that too, a subtlety not so subtle warning for his son. The line in the sand is not the same for every royal.

I don’t think there’s a better analysis of this scene on here.

Countries heads being above the law is kinda scary tho, even if only conditional.
