obviously, the antennas have a finite range (otherwise the server and the backups wouldn't need to be present on the battlefield)
if he did another iteration where she wasn't present, he could have won without her dying.

Great story otherwise. Mad respect to the author for writing a proper drama with an ending, as opposed to the hacks who write never-ending mangas/LNs to keep the cash flow going.

It's a shame Edge of Tomorrow shied away from this type of ending. Although more painful, the manga's ending feels much more real than the movie's fairy-tale ending.
That said, the movie fixed some serious plot holes, so I still appreciate it too!

I just reread this again after reading the original novel. The ending feels less sudden in the novel since it's hinted much earlier.

The manga also omits several world building details but also clarifies some others.

In the novel, the Mimics are described looking more like the carcasses of dead frogs.

The Mimics are specifically mentioned to be eco-forming weapons sent by an alien civilization from another planet light years away. The reason they were sent was to find new places to exploit due to overpopulation.

There's a reporter character in the novel who tails Rita around and seemingly knows about the loops. He doesn't do much but he gets saved by Rita and Keiji in the final battle.

Shasta is described as native American. There was feather headpiece gag during the scene where she promised to block Rita's lounge. She also collects gachapon that portrays a fictionalized version of Rita and her team.

The bed bunk guy is mentioned to have a girlfriend in the novel. And his relationship with Keiji is soured by the end of the novel because the girlfriend apparently got accidentally injured by Keiji when the base got assaulted. Keiji is just happy they both made it out alive.

The duel between Keiji and Rita was more epic in the novel IMO. It stretched to all the locations in the base, with Keiji having lost his axe at one point, and only ended at the cafeteria where they had their contest. Keiji described him winning only because he learnt how to fight from watching Rita, instead of how Rita learned from watching Mimics.

The novel also ended not with Keiji looking at the sky, but with him actually drinking the three day old moldy coffee.

I also realized there actually was a line in the novel that described the Jackets similar to costume onesies, in the context how it looked when it's not being worn. I'm guessing that's why they decided to make it look so un-mecha in the upcoming anime adaptation.

It's all meanless, if you can't win the war. Which naturally leads to the question of will they take the fight to the aliens ? Can they or is this extinction prolonged by a time-looper ?

I thought there would be more and they would win the war like in the movie based on this story.

honestly this ending would have been more preferrable than the movie. it would make the casual moviegoers talking instead of a vague happy ending.

I honestly felt like this human brain adapting to tachyons whatever and becoming another server felt shoehorned in at the last moment to force this sad ending of Rita dying to Kiriya.

i think it might be because more of the mimics were coming if either one of them were together for even 10 more minutes and since they already had the best loop they could possibly get, one of them would have to die so that they could stop the signal from being broadcasted and wrecking the best loop they might ever achieve.

I'm glad that hollywood adaptation did not just copy the original. Although this mange was fun to read, the movie edge of tomorrow was much better.

I see your comment every time I re-read this series once every few months, and I still think you're as much of a dumb bitch as I did the first time I read it over 7 years ago.

I'd also like to add that escape is not an option, simply "going out of range" doesn't magically disconnect you once connected and your backup is stored, at least for a human being that has destroyed that server. Rita destroyed it in loops 2 through 158.

If Rita had never come to the battlefield before the loop had started, would she have been stuck in it? Would she have still had to die then? That I've no idea, only the author of the book will ever know that I guess.
