This is what I think happened: Washio was hailed as a prodigy and became an esteemed hero... but he fell short. He wasn't good enough to accomplish what other people wanted from him and the weight of the expectations crushed him. Having said that, I think there was something else too: he had a nightmare about a destroyed village and a spider in a weird container in chapter 1. Maybe he failed to protect someone or he witnessed something the humans were doing that made him not want to continue.

I've said this before, but I think that his lack of self-esteem is the actual true core of the story. This is what the author actually wants to talk about in their story, the girls are there for us to not get bored as eye candy.

Them resolving his self-esteem issues will likely be the climax of the story itself, so it likely won't get resolved quickly.

Agreed.
I'm on the "his powers went berserk and destroyed something dear to him" train at the moment. It's not like some stories where the MC is depressed or putting themselves down because they're "powerless" when in reality he can go toe to toe with the gods. His actions are those of someone scared of doing something wrong again and expending the absolute minimum amount of power to complete the task at hand in order to avoid potential problems.
