Even a knight counts as a low-ranking noble, but as a commoner that means he's just an ordinary foot soldier. Let's not forget she's also a slave who technically can not say no to him.

We all know this author too well. either it will be bitter sweet or completely devastating.

There is that small 2% margin for a comedic ending, but that's mainly for oneshots. Who knows with this guy.

I'm just surprised at how this dude not only got a letter, but had to physically go to the lord's place to be notified of the draft. Seems like something that'd just be mentioned in the letter, usually.

It's possible if he has some kind of special status, he might be an officer of the army, or he might have high enough individual strength to warrant an individual summons, alternatively, he might have been issued a mission.

Sometimes captured soldier or noble that wasn't able to pay ransom for himself became a slave to the family that captured him. And through he was technically a slave, he was bound by honor rather than by binds, and as such those people often accompanied their captors as squires or man-at-arms in order to earn their freedom.
