She's not familiar with the concept of slave soldiers, but maybe that's because their nation does not employ them in that manner. Or more likely this is about the fact that she's a fairly attractive young woman and the battlefield full of armed (and likely horny) men is a very bad place to be for her, who has no known combat training or fighting skills whatsoever.

Maybe he should've considered making a descendant before he leaves for war and never returns. Then again, he's not a noble so there's really no prestigious family name that he has to pass on or anything. Even a knight counts as a low-ranking noble, but as a commoner that means he's just an ordinary foot soldier. Let's not forget she's also a slave who technically can not say no to him.
Slaves were usually private properties. Taking them to wars would piss off the nobles. If the slaves accompany the nobles, they only did slave duties and took care of the nobles. There were some that were ordered to the battlefield by the noble owners, but this was usually considered as un-noblelike. Most slave soldiers were usually those captured in battles, and were bought directly from the slave traders.

I'm thinking their society got something of a spartan helot and citizen kind of deal going on

What the fuck is this dude cooking?
your comment goes so well with your pfp. 😆

We all know this author too well. either it will be bitter sweet or completely devastating.

There is that small 2% margin for a comedic ending, but that's mainly for oneshots. Who knows with this guy.

thanks for the comic!

I'm just surprised at how this dude not only got a letter, but had to physically go to the lord's place to be notified of the draft. Seems like something that'd just be mentioned in the letter, usually.
It's possible if he has some kind of special status, he might be an officer of the army, or he might have high enough individual strength to warrant an individual summons, alternatively, he might have been issued a mission.

Sometimes captured soldier or noble that wasn't able to pay ransom for himself became a slave to the family that captured him. And through he was technically a slave, he was bound by honor rather than by binds, and as such those people often accompanied their captors as squires or man-at-arms in order to earn their freedom.
