It reminded him of when his mom actually loved him (I think) so now that he's accepted that his mom was kinda shit maybe he doesn't want the bento anymore?

The way I look at it, when we got the chapter explaining the whole "he gets touched and told 'I love you' all the time" from working (ch 14 pg 21 through ch 15 pg 8), the bento is probably the one pure act of love that would mean something to him. Wanting her (to make a) bento means he actually really likes her, and that would be the one thing she could do to return those feelings.
I could very well be wrong but that's my theory for now
