The teacher's "Spirits prefer those of noble birth" line was quite interesting. It's exactly how a noble would express it. In reality the causality is the opposite: Those whom the spirits originally favoured used their stronger magic powers to raise themselves above the majority not so favoured by the spirits. Over the centuries they would have formed the upper class, the nobility.
