So we have a guy who went crazy and became super powerful, and springs which if you drink from them, make you go crazy and super powerful. Surely, these two things aren't connected.

But really though, I'm assuming Karon got dosed by the "rival hero" (or their faction), who managed to get their hands on the spring water + secretly poisoned him with it. Dunno what exactly caused him to be "lured to" the ice staff yet, but considering the spring + the staff are both related to the same dragon, it's probly related too. But it's also possible he just took the staff because he knew the other hero was up to no good once he got poisoned + started going crazy, and he just wanted to get the staff away from him (which might explain why even after going crazy, he was still chosen by the staff, because even if losing his mind, he started with good intentions).
i'm 99% certain that leona was the other hero candidate. it's actually so heavily implied she is, that you'd have to have skipped or forgotten everything that was said before the lake exposition. or just be completely illiterate.

Novel reader here, and funnily yeah the two things you mentioned at the start are in fact not connected at all LMAO
And for your 2nd guess, Karon and the dragon are indeed related, but the spring water is just a fake out by the author, and you will see why in a couple chapters, just don't overthink about the water, that's all I can say since I don't want to spoil too much unless I'm being asked for it.

Not dismissing, but "one of the first"? That's like 2010 or something. IS is very derivative in its character design. Pretty sure there were dense protagonists long before that.
I mean, google most dense manga protagonist and he's here 100%, even in the pictures, he comes up first. =/ IS started in 2009-2010. How time flies. We've had a plethora of other harem protag MCs since then, but i'm "pretty" sure he started the trend.

now hold on
how could you forget Natsuru from Kampfer
Meh, Natsuru is more or less concerned. He's surrounded by girls while being one himself, but only a few manifest interest in him. I'd say the MORE girls vie for the MC's affection and s/he remains oblivious to their advances, the more dense s/he is. Ichika wins that for me because man had like 7 or so girls gunning for him. He's literally the one guy in a school setting full of girls. =/

Using google is the most popular, not the original, or the one starting the trend. If you googled that before 2009, you'd get a different result, but you'd get a result.

We've had a plethora of harem MC protags before that, and a bunch of them were dense (Ranma, Tenchi, Keitarou, Saito). We've had other protagonists who were dense before that (Ataru, Yuuji, Inuyasha). The difference is how dense they are. Over time traits get exaggerated.

Tenchi wasn't dense, he just didn't have the balls to deal with that bullshit until the author wrote him a spine in the stories the OVAs are based on.

Maybe so, but I remember people calling him dense at the time.

When talking about intelligent, big non-humans in caves with treasures/secrets to be guarded, the likelihood she was talking about a dragon became much higher. So yeah, it turned out to be one. Not to mention the dude Usato fended off suddenly manifested a couple of dragon characteristics.

On a side note, not really a fan of that mistaken gender gag here with Leona, it fell flat for me and only made Usato look more like a moron or a dense musclehead.

Probably the versions of him from Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo, but the OVAs are the canon storyline.
"Canon"... They're different versions with roughly the same cast, and they're all canon in their own stories. Actually probably the franchise that taught me that "canon" is not important at all, and that's before death of the author.

Most people I've heard agree that OVA is best, though, plus non-OVA Kiyone. And Tokimi's hilarious once she joins the cast in the end, with a cute chibi version.

Anyway, the main point is that characters being dense, the protagonist in particular, as been used as a plot device to prolong the story has been used for a long time, since before anime even existed.

The OVAs are the only ones written by the original novel author. All of the other series were written by different people. Also he's not dead.

IIt's ike how Dragon Ball GT was declared non-canon by Toriyami and he wrote Super instead.

Doesn't matter. They exist in an official capacity.

"Death of the Author" is a literary concept. It doesn't mean anyone has actually died.

This means it's not part of his continuity, but exists as a separate canon.
