When I saw the bolt-throwers I immediately remembered Flakkson's Rune of Seeking*.Ahem. Counterpoint: Magic 🌈🧞♂️
No reason a ballista couldn't simply be the initial launch system for a rocket-powered, magic-seeking bolt with a continuous rod warhead that neatly bisects his glorified glider. Well, except for the fact that they're all idiots.
Seriously, though, a siege weapon's "500 yard effective range" would be measured against fortifications (literally hitting the broad side of a city) or massed infantry formations on a ballistic trajectory. Shooting literally anything down? You might as well throw rocks.
Especially because the ballistae pictured can't aim up at more than like 45 degrees before the body hits the aiming platform.
Incase you forgot, the dragon that got shot down in GoT s8 was flying high up in the sky, it wasn't doing anything other than having a nice fly around when it got sniped out of the skywell, dragon needs to fly low to make sure the fire make contact. meanwhile allen can carpet bombing at higher altitudes. sure that dragon can fly high but their breath effective range are much shorter. plus, modern plane are faster than dragon too, they have no chance against Allen.
he had ranges and air superiority. not to mention higher fire power compared to ballista and catapult.
Welcome to modern warfare bitch! XDBwahhahaa, after all that fiery speech about being confident they’d win, they immediately got hit by reality when the kingdom’s army got completely destroyed by MC alone

Although we would all love to have cool rays of death on the battlefield (ignoring the dreadful ramifications of being on the wrong end of that armament), it seems more of an experimental gimmick, at least for now with our current technology. Same goes with railguns. The US recently tested a directed energy weapon, what people tend to call laser (though this isn't accurate), so that is likely going to eventually make the meta change once again once the size issues are dealt with.
Don't forget how they shot said dragon while it's positioned on a "MOBILE SHIP!" (I shaked my head at it even working in the first place! Only reason it WORKED on Smaug was Smaug was an idiot and arrogantly LET Bard shoot him, unaware of the chink in his scale's Bard's ancestor gave him long time ago leaving a Vulnerablilty! GoT fucking "D&D" never FATHOM that the WAVES of a Moving Vessel at sea would make AIMMING the damn things hard as hell to do! Also the Dragons would have to be STUPIDLY not moving about to make getting hit HARDER! Arrows don't do SHIT, and all it would take is a "Flame Run" to make the Ballistae's useless)Shooting dragons with a ballistae worked wonders in GoT surely shooting an even faster moving smaller target will work too!
I mean in universe they don't have any of the information that we have as the audience so its a kinda logical, didn't work out for them though.
I think she was already aware of his status as a Reincarnator! It's why she TAUNTED him about Ana's "preceived Fate" because she felt he "Deserved it for trying to RUIN her world" (The classic "when there is more then one Reincarnate! One of them will get egotistical because they want to be the MAIN CHARACTER! I think there was ONE series I saw where because the Incarnates were reincarnated NEAR each other, the Elder of the two, and by that I mean the Elder one was in her late 20's compared to the other one who was a Teenage girl, was able to CONVINCE the younger one NOT to go through with her FUTURE plans to "be the Heroine" as she noted "all the shit that BEFALLS the So-Called Reincarnated Heroine when she tries to make a Reverse Harem and fuck over the Villainess character" Scaring the girl BEFORE she got big headed and making her ACT as the "Heroine" she is reincarnated only BETTER as in NOT pursuing the "Targets" and realizing the world is NOT A GAME! Catching the "Heroine" before "Main Character Syndrome" kicked in! It was a Cooking Manga since the Elder Reincarnate was a Baker in her last life and the story is her just living her new life)I think she should already start suspecting something about the main character, since he "invented" the plane.
Reminder, Amy is a "Self-centered POS Idiot!" Doubtful she's had even thought more then a few seconds about her "modern era" knowledge (or if she had it! She might be the FEW Isekai individuals to not have too much knowledge cause she was likely an idiot back in Modern Japan.....a Typical Japanese Schoolgirl who only cares to read Otome Stories!)Agree. That is also not even factoring the wind speeds too. Wind speeds generally increase with altitude, meaning that their shoots are going to be extremely inaccurate. But it is like you said, they'd need so much ballistas/projectiles that it isn't logistically possible, they'd go into a national debt and run out of precious wood/iron resources.
Guess little Amy didn't do her research enough (judging that it was her who gave the idea of the ballista, based on the prince's wording of "new weapon"). Back to school, witch! more science and less otome games.
Would be really funny if they tried it again, making more of those ballistas only to have them stolen because they couldn't field enough people to protect them (and are cumbersome to move) and it ended up being used against them for a siege.
Only partially. Proxy still works and is still used. Then there's also the new AHEAD ammunition. However both are tied into radar systems to estimate roughly where the plane is going and going to be to get them on target. And often times have incredibly muzzle velocity. This is also not factoring in the speed of the ammunition. Cold arm projectiles are subsonic. Even if they have the range to hit aircraft, the shooter will need to lead and the pilot will need to be asleep. Either that or there needs to be so many projectiles that the pilot cannot evade.
Even for most of WW2, anti-air guns were extremely inefficient in downing aircraft for similar reasons. While the rounds could reach the required altitude, supersonic rounds still required a few seconds to travel. Prop planes move at such speeds that a few seconds might mean a hundred yards difference in position. That's why we see not only volume of fire being important, but also timed explosions, which broaden the effect of each round.
Ultimately, proximity fuses solved the WW2 anti-air issue by sticking a tiny radar into an anti-air round; this meant the crew didn't have to guess and manually input the timing of the explosion. All they had to do was shoot close enough to the target, and the round would explode when it came close enough to the plane.
Of course, jet propulsion would overturn that meta again because planes would be too fast for a gun. that's why radars and SAMs are used these days for taking out modern jets.
the MC's plane on page 8 seems to be the straight-wing CAS type. slow-flying in modern combat terms, but still ungodly fast for cold arms. that dinky medieval artillery isn't doing a damn thing.
Direct energy weapons would have the potential to ruin the meta as badly as guns, tanks, planes, and most recently drones did prior. Really hard to dodge something travelling at the speed of light. Honestly might force everyone to fly super low. Which hilarious enough would then make SPAAGs more relevant again. Even without being able to mount these weapons, since now everyone is right where those would want them. The US recently tested a directed energy weapon, what people tend to call laser (though this isn't accurate), so that is likely going to eventually make the meta change once again once the size issues are dealt with.
