How exactly is he protecting them when assassins could be sent? Their house could be burnt down? They could be attacked in the street? Seems like he's doing a half-assed job if he just leaves MC and the Mother in the slums, not to mention it doesn't show much appreciation for what he did for their family.

I know it’s late, but I’d imagine the duke’s got his own agents sneaking around and keeping an eye on them from the shadows. The butler did already investigate Allen and his mum before Anastasia even told her dad about him after all, so I figure they’ve got a pretty strong information/spy network going on. Any assassins the prince has organised in the city itself may very well have been assassinated themselves.

As for why that wasn’t the case in the original game, and Anastasia was able to be killed while travelling, I’d say it’s more just because it’s a lot easier to have discreet agents in heavily populated cities than out in the wilderness.
