I think they both might be inspired by La Tomatina, a Spanish tomato throwing festival. I'm not sure if there's any real world food throwing events specifically relating to marriage and I believe the only food throwing event in Japan is Setsuban.

I have a theory based on the what the festival is about. Once upon a time one of the previous queen(princess) of the elves eloped. With who? Who knows but they were more then likely prosecuted for their love and the rest is history. Thus the crown of flowers is referred to as tiara

That's a neat little theory but that has nothing to do with the translator seeing the term "flower crown" used to refer to a flower crown and deciding "nah I personally don't like that", as they mention in the credits page
