You know, I've never seen the good guys spend the entire chapter thoroughly explaining their plan in detail...
It happens sometimes. Thing is, showing is probably more exciting to the readers than telling. For storytelling's sake explaining a plan beforehand is only sensible when said plan is meant to go off the rails.
And then you have series like Orcsen, that I read the first few chapters of, where the characters go on and on about logistics, equipment, armaments, technology, formations, chain of command, maneuvers, intelligence, support, strategy and tactics, military reforms, combined arms, rations, simulations, terrain, mobility, training regimens... Just all kinds of military discussion for chapters and chapters without any actual contact with the enemy.

I’ll be, damn they played it straight and he was a bad guy. Here I thought they go with a “not all sketchy humans are evil.” Nope, all sketchy humans are evil and you should trust your instincts.
Well they just said that in case of defeat he is to continue acting as an ordinary merchant, that means he is going to be an ordinary merchant for the rest of his life :pacman:

Think you misunderstood what the the strategist was saying. He is saying multi-racial societies are a diseased ideology that erodes their nation. They are an amoral nation of human supremacists, through and through.
Nah. Not what he was saying. He even said that the foot soldiers were expendable specifically because of their ideology. Page 17 "One is expendable soldiers driven by strong human supremacist ideology".

Oh snap, the merchant was with the human supremacist nation. He's not giving any vibe of having any discrimination issues with beastmen though, though he may just be good at hiding it. For a spy, his gathering of information is a bit lacking. Perhaps he was just too busy bringing in food to have a talk, but they were all drinking so how hard could it have been to just ask a bit about where they've traveled from. If he had learned they were beastmen who came from the plateau or even the type of materials they brought in, his assessment would have immediately changed regarding their individual strength. Did he not hear of the sparring match? It appears he also has no other collaborators in town, which seems a bit odd. How did he even set up that hidden room with that tool all by himself?

I'm not really sure about how smart the strategist actually is. Even if he considers the soldiers with strong supremacist ideology tendencies to be "expendable", losing a few thousand of those isn't going to do anything to change the ideology of the country. Worse, as an occupying force, they will be even more likely to be conducting war crimes against the non humans. All he's doing is ensuring maximum resistance. Why is he even going ahead with the pursuit of expansion if he knows that racial tension will cause the country to collapse from within? Not that it's easy to solve those issues first, but he should be focusing on that. They really should be reconsidering the expansion policy. I'm also not sure about how they're maintaining their supply lines through monster infested lands. Also the strategy is a surprise attack and to somehow keep it a secret that the city has been taken over. What are they going to do? Somehow stop every scout on horse from immediately being sent out to inform the rest of the country of the attack the moment it happens? Bigger numbers go brrr is always better, but I think the rest is very dubious.

Deploying magic soldiers who use lightning is going to be interesting, because bikubiku like things is definitely going to scare the little ones. Once they realise it's not actually dangerous though... Yeah, it's going to be a massacre.

But damn, how fortunate is that city that the ostrich beastkin move in the very day before an attack. If they had moved in earlier, the spy would have been able to gather more information and get the attack to be timed with them being away on expedition to gather materials or just call it off, and if it was later, they may have just decided to go somewhere else instead of trying to liberate a city with no information on its inhabitants or the opponents. Instead, they're going to wake up and immediately get to fight. Though actually, the attack is a bit delayed, so surely this will give the spy some time to gather more information and realise it's a terrible mistake. In any case, the ostrich are set as mercenaries/adventurers and their value will immediately be on full display which should give them better conditions when the higher ups inevitably try to seal a contract with them.

Their first cry: "Gwah"
XD

they are the bad guy since there's also no good reason to actually invade, even if it is to partially kill off the human supremacists.
It still involves innocent being killed for some political reason.

also this is in a place where monsters are a constant threat so they weaken that defence of it too.
Thats pretty shallow. The nations are actively at war. We don't even know which side instigated. Heck sounds like its a war that started with a rebellion against beastkin supremacists. These two are a strategist and a merchant. Nether of them can call of the war, the strategist can only try to keep as many alive as he can. Defining it in black and white terms of good vs bad, is foolish.

If that's true, much of the context is lost in the translation.

and from reading spoilers that is likely true
I feel like the context is very clear.

The line of thought started with the fact that he's sending "expendable soldiers with human supremacist ideology to the front line."

Then an explanation of why the ideology took root in the country.

Then the concern that this ideology would bring about internal conflict in an increasingly multi-racial society.

Hence his conclusion that the ideology is a disease that would erode their nation.
(Note that "human supremacist ideology" is the only ideology ever talked about here. A "multi-racial society" is not an ideology; it's a state of being.)

Afterwards the thought circles back to "and that's why it's the human supremacists who are sent to the front line, because we could afford to lose them."

I'm coping. i want him to be a double agent, feeding false info. or at least someone who'd betray the human kingdom for the munchkins.

Wouldn't metal armor be better to have against lightning type attacks, because of the faraday cage effect? As long as there's metal parts contacting the ground the electricity would be much more harmless than just about any other elemental type attack.

Just like high voltage power line inspectors.

Gohan, I mean Alan the merchant is gonna be a recurring character, a personal favorite of the little ostrich as they link his face to the uncle that gives them food

They may be enemies now but Nagan will enter an alliance with Heed thanks to the cunning and quick thinking of the strategist to prevent the murder chickens to destroy Nagan

Honestly the characters from Nagan are one of my favorites upon the reading the WN specially the strategist due to how legit his intelligence is, manage to keep Nagan standing even if bordered by multiple countries that have their own special force or people with absurd power like Reitsu

So they planed to have a 10 to 1 advantage, which would historically be a reasonable ratio for castle siege assault, and now that new forces arrived that will put them on only a 2 to 1 advantage(disregarding any casualties enroute) they still want to execute the plan. I'm gonna say this falls on bad writing on a "fun" read.

They are also planning to involve their magic squad which is notable because those were up until the ostriches arrived considered important enough to keep hidden for an upcoming decisive battle. Like they are taking the necessary precaution here.

Pretty sure if the army has a common uniform the lil' ones are gonna have an easy time telling friend from breakfast.
No.

These little ones’ brains are smooth as butter. They’d be the ideal stone to skip across water if it wasn’t in their heads. There is no way they’d recognize a Uniform, and then retain that knowledge for next time they see them- assuming they every do.

Their confidence in the magic squad is well founded.

They’re worth more than a Beastman (who is 10x that of a human) is in combat power.

These 500 soldiers are enough to make the rest of the army capable of easily cutting through the monster infested forest with no casualties. Their abilities are such that they have contingencies for their gear to be destroyed if they are in danger of dying to prevent it falling into enemy hands.

The ONLY reason this isn’t tilted so far in their favor is because of the Ostrichs’ bullshit levels of magic and especially Electric Resistance. Any normal beastmen mercs would get their shit stomped in, never mind the 500 standing guardsmen in the town.
