It was fishy in the first few pages, but the moment Viola referred Lou as 'they' and not 'her', I saw red flags up the wazoo.

I'd recommend writing around pronouns entirely, rather than using gender neutral ones. The moment I saw you use 'they', I immediately knew that it was a trap. For example, on page 7 you could have her say "Maybe it's love?" instead of "Maybe they really like him?" It would convey the same meaning without giving anything away or sounding awkward.

I did consider doing something like that, and in hindsight, it might’ve been funnier if I did, so I’ll probably update it to include that change at some point tomorrow.
