Frey will end up pulling a semi-convincing double agent move, trust.

Nah, if anything that'd make Xiao 'right' if they needed to resort to such schemes to win.

So I think the best way for him to REALLY deny Xiao is to lean harder into being the tactician and be able to figure out how to get his team out of any situation.
Something like Shiroe from Log Horizon.

If Frey ends up "betraying" Crim I'm going to be very dissapointed, so far the majority of the characters (and all of the main ones) have had pretty consistent personalities, him betraying would go against his established personality and would be a sign of bad character writing, though a double betrayal could be acceptable, still not great but doable.
One of the first things we were told about Frey was that he's competitive and hates to lose.

Sure, but his personality has never been portrayed as someone who'd betray his friends, on the contrary, he's been shown to be extremely loyal to his friends, so him betraying any of them to "win" would go against his established personality. I could see him discussing the issue, I could see him being adamant and insisting on "taking the deal" but in no way shape or form can I see him betraying them.

EDIT: ie, he wouldn't sacrifice friendship to win, that would destroy him.

Yeah I think Xiao just hit a few of Frey's buttons as we don't know... that much about them IRL besides why Crim is a vegetarian. I don't think he will betray Crim but he will maybe hesitate on a decision in which Crim gets glory or create friction within the group to get his own time in the sun.

honestly surprised to see so much hate for this direction, adding a little tension to the relationship is way better than frey just being a boring childhood friend glasses guy forever. and yeah they’re kids, of course they’re going to get in stupid fights with their friends and make bad decisions.

it’s cool to me how the manga is adapting and elevating the source material, it really feels like a second draft

Hope this ends up being some sort of 4D chess... And not the characters being dumb
Yeah that's what I'm hoping for too. Like Frey is tricking Xiao into thinking he can be manipulated in the future by pretending to be super insecure about his friendship with Crim. And the reason he lied to Crim about the conversation is either because Xiao's spies are watching or because Crim doesn't really like scheming and may reject the plan.

Letting him wrestle with the temptation isn't a bad thing for the story, even if the fact that this is manga-only filler undermines the stakes.
