Am I the only one who has trouble figuring out who’s who in this? Apart from the art style making a couple of characters look very similar, I’m sure I’m also mixing them up with another very similar yuri manga that I’ve forgotten about…

No you're not alone. I spent a minute or two flipping back and forth, trying to figure out how Yuzu looks different from this other girl. At first, I didn't realize that it was Yuzu that got split up. The only thing that helped was realizing that this girl has highlights at the ends of her hair and Yuzu does not.

Also this series is stuck, for me. Because Yuzu is who she is, there's been no feeling or progress or no definitive hint that she's even aware still. It feels almost like a gag manga at this point but it's not that. Something needs to start happening and it can't be brushed off again.

no, I am consistently having issues too. This manga was easier than normal tho, thanks to
1. giving the chars unique animal ears/ribbon ears for the majority of the panels (on the other hand it made the other panels even harder
2. splitting them so there was mainly only mc + 1 other the majority of the time (although just before and after each split it was really hard, as before all ppl was there, and after you still had to figure out who she split with by looking at contextual clues in the convo.

Even with those though, I will admit that I only remember there to be "mc", "mc's love interest" "friend who knows she likes yuzu" and "friend who doesn't know". Sometimes it feels like there are more than 4 girls too, but I am unsure what is up with that.
And now there will be another "firend who knows she is in love", so contectual clues will be even harder - but at least this friend is short and bright haired, whereas the other girl is iirc long and dark haired.

"one last hail mary for the summer" I'm sorry, but i can't read this anymore. This translation is utter garbage. I rather read 480p raws than this, which i will start to do. You lose all feeling as to how characters would sound like in japanese. This isn't some american comic, translate properly. Had to drop the scanlation of Otome Teikoku because there seemed to be some internal changes and some doofus decided to be a professional zoomer localizer. Too bad about this one though, but what to expect from the group that spoiled a whole chapter just for their April Fools.

Yeah there's a fine line to localizing, especially if the original japanese is overly slangy. You have to strike a balance between using equivalent slang/idioms in the target language and using plain speech so that it doesn't come off as too (in this case) American. This ain't it. Hopefully seven seas does a better job.

"Hail Mary Pass" is completely apt, if it's analogous to the original. It would betray some resignation in Minami; it basically means "last stand."

Minami is a lot nearer to giving up than she thinks.

For those who still can't tell the girls apart:

The problem is their names. They can be referred to either by surname or given at any point in time. In other words, there are five characters but TEN character names that are all in use.

Character recognition:

Ikoma Minami: main character. Tall, extroverted, beautiful, funny, love idiot . Has it bad for her childhood friend...

Mitaki Yuzu: Tiny girl who Minami is always either thinking about or talking about or talking to. Short brown hair, clings to Minami and is worried about losing their closeness.

Tatsumi Hinori: Minami's wing woman, dark straight bangs, distinctive horizontal braid along the back of her head, pretty, perfect partner for Minami.

Nitori Tsubasa: Short, short bangs, very serious looking, cool eyes, strong, has it bad for...

Unohara Kosame: Bright eyed, black hair, ultra optimistic and caring sweetheart who may or may not think Nitori is serious about her. Almost always seen with Nitori.

First off, I wish this manga goes the "Kengan Omega" route and keeps giving us the names of one another everytime they're introduced

Second, why does it feel like Nitori is the endgame for Minami now, like its showing Yuzu as this far-off star she can't grasp
