Phase mutation might also be about the grasshoppers themselves? Apparently grasshoppers normally don't swarm (as mentioned in the comic as well), but once there are too many of them in the same place, they will trigger mutations (physical changes) in each others and then swarm out as the ravenous hordes that eat fields clean and generally cause great destruction on greenery and farming.

Versa is a scholar and magician, but I can't help but feel sad for her that it's only Naoki doing all the thinking in this chapter. She had nothing to contribute while they were talking with Riddle even though she was supposed to be a "brains" type of character. At least Ayl can fight, but Versa's role is completely overshadowed by Naoki himself.

On a side note, I remember Isekai Afro Mario Marquez asking Naoki to find his reincarnated elf lover, but I guess that's a forgotten plot point now.
