While the series ratings on the mainsite by-themselves can be used for discovery, they tend to be too broad, arbitrary and less useful than similar mechanisms on other sites like MU (at least in my experience).
Another more community-driven metric that could be leveraged here on top, is a vote on individual chapter discussions and/or derived individual chapter ratings on the mainsite.
By using existing discussion threads in particular where actual users participate, positive/negative votes could serve as an additional indicator of opinion towards a series. Something that later can be converted into "community ratings" of-sorts for chapters on the mainsite and potentially combined with the general series rating in order to create a more accurate measure that would further aid with discovery.
This mechanic was demonstrated with Steam community reviews and somewhat on /r/manga, basically the gist is to attract users on the forums while democratically adjusting the ratings on the mainsite.
