I think this is somewhat exaggerated.
It might be hard to believe and perhaps not all ways of laying out the facts will lead to the same reaction, but assuming she will either not believe him or still be offended no matter what he says and there is no way that leading with the truth would solve the problem is probably a stretch.
I understand why he might fear taking his chances, especially with trust between them being low at the moment. But that does not negate the possibility of another option than still hiding what's going on.

It's honestly probably still the better option to calmly explain the situation, because keeping up the act only makes things worse if she finds out later, let alone the fact that his silence doesn't really solve her suspicions anyway as this chapter showed.
If they hope to salvage their marriage, there comes a point where he needs to come clean and she needs to trust his explanation. Without either, their chances aren't good.

It would be easily cleared up but absolutely I would have demanded an answer, even in the shitty position he was in. I guess he felt he couldn't ask her since he wouldn't answer her questions.

So very contrived. It feels like the author couldn't think of a good out for him from that end of the last chapter.

If I were her he'd answer the question or would be on the couch (at the least) until he did. My wife agreed when I showed her this.

clearly this marriage reached a point that any spark, if there was any at all, is fizzled out.

I refuse to believe the wife had any ill intention at any point in this manga. She's just taking her husband for granted, and with such a stable marriage that their one and only daughter is already in high school, why wouldn't she? It's clear that she's just been absorbed in work for far too long to ever believe that her boring husband that is a grown adult and can take care of himself would ever need her attention.

For the dense, here's everything wrong with what I've just said.
1. She's too absorbed in her job.
2. She's been neglecting her husband.
3. It seems this has been going on for more than a decade since they only have a daughter and she's already in high school.

Ayase lit a match to dried grass. That's the analogy I'm going with.

kinda makes me think the whole "infidelity" part is a means to humor, rather than a serious facet of the plot (even as one of the three main characters is gunning for it on some level).

that character in particular turning out to be a gigantic girlfailure maiden-in-love with the ML, sorta cuts through the severity of her intent.
the wife not actually being BAD toward her husband, diminishes the "impetus" for him to fall to temptation.
and the husband was just generally subpar in a lot of ways, in the eyes of everyone around him - but he's now turning some aspects of his life around and garnering notice and even admiration from some of those same individuals.

We've got the standard fare of misunderstanding/lack of communication that we see in all manner of comedic manga titles, and that facet is currently carrying most of the narrative tension.

Ultimately...I sorta see an endgame where, via the coworker fitness nut, the husband fixes the problems in his life and betters himself and his self-image, which would have ripple effects that mend his marriage, and he and his wife end up happier and closer together. I dunno where that leaves his coworker/blackmailer/admirer, per se, but maybe she also finds some measure of happiness in not fucking him, but...I dunno, spins it into a career built around bodybuilding and opening a business, or something.

I don't know if that's at all the goal of the author, but the tone of all of this is more wacky and lighthearted, than it is serious and sordid (even with the latent threat of adultery still hanging in the air over multiple characters). So this heading toward a "happy ending" for everyone doesn't feel impossible.
But, we shall see, of course.

I just wish there was a better way to handle him just not saying he got himself a personal trainer after his daughter said he was fat. The conflict just feels so forced when he had such an easy excuse to use in order to stall for time. It’s not the worst thing ever but it does bug me. Otherwise? Pretty fun character
