One absurd thing in that world is that a religion like that can have its own whole country and even neighbouring countries are/were happy with it. There's no way the fundamental aspects it could have been hidden, after all. You can't simply send 100k monsters to a neighbouring country, some of them quite hulking, without having them prepared well beforehand. It's also openly a religion of hatred toward elves and beastmen. While lots of humans would be okay with that, many wouldn't or at least would be suspicious of how they gather elves and beastmen, who then disappear entirely. The cardinals are disgusting, crazy bastards, and one ought to assume the rest of the church hierarchy isn't any better. An absurd thing.

An important character got captured by the villains. They used her as a lab rat, turning her nigh immortal but her lower body became massive grotesqueries covering a whole dungeon.
